Care for Magical Creatures; Friday, Period 2 [ 03/27 ].

After a few days of trying to be more proper about things, Minsc was about to go nuts. He was probably diverging from his syllabus, but he didn't care. He firmly decided that today's class would be one of action!

As such, there was a note on the door of the classroom requesting that the students relocate themselves to the Danger Shop.

Where they would find themselves in a nice wilderness clearing on the edge of some sparse woods, sunny with a faint breeze that seemed to indicate that there was a sea not too far away. Minsc was ready and waiting for the students and greeted them with his usual broad smile.

"Good morning, students! I hope you are feeling adventurous because, today, we'll be doing some very hands on scenarios. Of course, each situation we will be doing today can also be discussed on a theoretical plane, so if you are not quite feeling limber, you may choose to simply talk of the situation instead of charging in and experiencing it for yourself. You may also feel free to pick and choose as little or as many scenarios as you'd like."

"In a moment, I will set the scene for three different scenarios. You may demonstrate what you would do, by yourself or with a partner, by entering into the simulation and I promise there will be a great deal of fighting involved, so let it all out! Or, if you are unsure about putting yourself in even fake danger, today, a little discussion about the situation is perfectly acceptable."

"Now, I also know some of you have very valiantly embarked on your transformations; if you have your reports ready, please turn them in at the end of class. If not, well, then, I look forward to reading them!"

With that, he went to set up today's activities.

Dispelling all facade of proper dispositions entirely.

"Take a moment," instructed Minsc, "and look due south. Do you see those large holes in the ground? Those are the homes of ankhegs (http://neo3555.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/ankheg.jpg), great giant mantis like creatures who burrow in underground tunnels and pop out as you pass by to attack and dismember you!"

"There are rumours that a man has taken up the task of improving armour made from the tough ankheg skins, and has gone underground to research them. But he disappeared for a long time, then other rumours started surfacing about a strong half-human, half-ankheg creature skulking around. It would appear as though the man, so deep in his research, had started to make himself an ankheg through assimilation and, whispers say, magic, too."

"What do you do? Go inside one of the liars and show me how you handle this problem, or, if you prefer, theoretisize on what you'd do. I will not tell you what I would do, as I am interested in what you say yourself!"

For the second scenario, Minsc barely had to say anything at all. He appeared as though he was about to, but he was interrupted by a squawking chicken, running into the clearing and flapping his wings. Before Minsc could even shift gears, the chicken talked.

It implored the students for help. It would seem that it had been turned into a chicken by a powerful sorcerer who lived in the stronghold just north of here, a sorcerer known to be very antisocial and ill-tempered. Case in point, the chicken elaborated, he was the sorcerer's apprentice, and he had gotten the wrong ingredients for a potion and that was precisely the reason he had turned into a chicken. Could you please help him, somehow, to talk some sense into his master and get him changed back?

What do you do? Take the initiative to take action, or discuss what actions, in a perfect world, you would take.

"To the west of where we currently stand," said Minsc, "is an area known to be overpopulated with great giant spiders, some of them magically inclined. I've just had a word with a young man stuttering with fright, because his soster, seeking spider treasure, went into the territory. Now, I've it on good authority that the queen of this spider hive has recently been slain, and they need a new one and ancient lore tells of a process of the spiders capturing maidens and slowly transforming them into big, hideous incarnations (http://www.mobygames.com/images/i/17/39/736389.png) of...well, it's not pretty, but that's they're queen. It might still be soon enough to save her before she is too far gone."

"What do you do? And if you wish to go ahead and do it, by all means! It's Friday! There should be some good battles in our lives!"

As always, he's available after class, though he's itching to try out a few of the scenarios himself, even if he had, technically, already lived through them.

All scenarios can be completely modded or handwaved if you'd like to do that, but I can also feed them back gladly! I'll just warn you that I might be a little slow until evening EST.

Also, the second scenario is straight from a quest in Baldur's Gate; the other two are very similar, with a little bit of a twist to make them more interesting.

And, yes, I had to use nekkid Minsc twice.

"What happens to the spiders should they remain without a queen?" Leto wondered. Not that transforming unwilling humans into spiders should be condoned, but should the species disappear he expected it would have consequences.

Minsc shrugged a little. "How should I know? Do I look like a spider monster? Although, it would stand to reason that they would just keep looking for one until they got one. If they don't find one, maybe they die out. Or maybe they don't. Maybe they keep on trudging along in a less-than-preferred state, continuing to try to convert otherwise innocent peoples."

"But what if the spiders die out?" Leto replied. "They must have a niche in the ecology system of this place, and their extinction would cause changes. Perhaps it is worth sacrificing one human life in order to keep the balance in place?"

Minsc chuckled a little, though he did so morosely. "Hardly one human life, Sir Leto. The main cause of death for adventurers and villagers in this area is spider venom."

"So, their numbers should be limited." Leto thought for a moment. "What are their strengths and weaknesses?"

Minsc grinned a little. "Their strengths are the whole deadly poison thing and being a lot bigger than the spider you find in your drain. They have many legs and eyes and are very quick and strong. As for their weaknesses..."

He trailed off, to give a very dramatic effect.

"Can they be hurt by any weapons?" Leto asked. "Fire? Drowning? Poisons?"

"Yes, yes, yes, and yes," Minsc said with a nod. "Although the sword spider usually requires an enhanced weapon, you'll need to get them to stay in the water for drowning, and the poison would have to be of a non-spider variety."

Firekeeper was present and accounted for, as well as accompanied by her usual wolfish compatriot.

Oooh! Bugs! Monster bugs! Reno grinned and cracked his knuckles.

"So, do I get a weapon for somethin' like this?"

If he didn't, he'd cope. But if they decided they were hungry or something, He'd prefer to go in armed, at least.

"I'd feel pretty obligated to fail you if you wanted to rush in there without one, Sir Reno."

He then motioned to the options of ~~moddable weapons ~~that the mun forgot to mention, la~~.~~

Reno smirked and thought that over, mulling over the weapons before picking for himself a quarterstaff that looked nice and sturdy. It had a fair bit more length than his usual fare, but it sat well enough in his hands.

"How you figure this will work? I ain't never been up against monsters quite like them before. Do they cast Stop Web? There's a monster back home looks kinda like them that'll pull that kinda shit. Bein' frozen in place'd suck."

Minsc nodded. "The more powerful ones," he said, "have the ability to shoot webs that will greatly inhibit your movement; some not only stop you in place, but they also paralyze you for a spell ~~or until you make a saving check~~. They are not creatures to be taken lightly."

"So it's a big ugly Kimara Bug by a different name," Reno mused, and then nodded. "Okay. So trick is to not get stuck in the web in the first place, yo. Anything else I should know about 'em?"

"They have very hard heads," Minsc offered, knocking himself on his own. "They make some of the finest helms. And they have a bad habit of ducking back into the ground and moving under it right when it's getting good. And they spit, too."

"They spit?"

Like llamas?

"Okay. I'll work around that. I'm quick, I'm good with a stick, that'll have to be good enough, yo!" A pause. A grin. A thumbs-up. And then Reno was making his way at a run for the tunnels.

"As Tempus wills it!" Minsc called happily after Sir Reno as he dashed off, filled with pride for such an intrepid young student. He didn't even feel the need to get ready to use his healing spell. That boy could handle it just fiiiine.

Well, this one did a great deal to foster Arthur's faith in Minsc's transformation magic. Really.

You could tell by the look on his face. (You could also somewhat tell by the look on his face that he had some trouble not simply muttering, it's a fucking chicken, but he managed to restrain himself in the face of someone in need. So to speak)

"I'll talk to your master," he assured the... chicken. "But the both of you should have known better."

Arthur was a bit busy making sure he didn't look like he was staring.

Okay, he was staring. What on Earth...?
