Thaumaturgy 101 - First Period, Thursday - 2/5

Today's class was once again in the Danger Shop, a resource she was really starting to enjoy.

"All right class. Today, we'll be working on two things: meditation and visualization. Both of these are absolutely key to thaumaturgy and have other benefits as well. If you tend to be a more stressful type, meditation might assist you in the future. And visualization is always useful to keep goals and plans clear and focused. As talking about it is both boring and entirely unhelpful, we'll be doing three exercises today.

"Consider the third one 'extra credit', all right?

"Now, onward we go."

Meditative.

"I'd like you all to try to assume a meditative state. Now, rest assured, I'm well aware that closing your eyes and humming doesn't do it for everyone, so feel free to do this however you choose. Sword drills, listening to music, dancing... whatever it takes to clear your mind. You can use these mats if you'd like over here."

"For the second exercise, I'd like you to try and imagine an apple, or some other fruit that you would be familiar with. Concentrate on the texture, the taste, the size, the shape... all of the above. When you think you've come to the whole of an 'apple' within your mind, please put your hand here," and she pointed to a set of small podiums on the other side of the room.

"And what you've come up with should appear in your hand.

"Eat it or not as you dare."

She smiled.

"This part is not mandatory, but I offer it for anyone willing to try.

"I'd like you to pair up with another willing party, or even just someone who'd like to see for themselves, and go into these booths here. What you're going to try and do is visualize that apple with an audience, some sort of pressure on you.

"You're not always going to have solitude and quiet to work, after all, so if you'd like to give yourself a mental workout, please do try.

"Inside the booth is a screen. Touch your hand to the podium inside the booth and an image of what you've come up with will be presented there."

She smirked just a little.

"I figure this might be just a bit safer than having whatever it is show up."

Who was not afflicted with the fierce hat disease of the day. Possibly because she was already wearing clothing from 1898.

Sometimes, I have to wonder about my brain.

Johnny Storm

Johnny was paying more attention to his girlfriend, than to the lecture. He wanted to make sure she was all right.

Savannah Levine

Savannah clenched her fist every now and then, the only outward sign she was allowing herself to show of her confusion.

Everyone had told her that this was her favorite class and she was feeling extremely guilty that she couldn't remember anything about it.

Savannah was here, trying not to look as confused and frustrated as she was feeling. This not remembering thing sucked.

Chris Halliwell

Chris could definitely use the meditation today. Between Savannah's memory loss and having a hat stuck on his head, he was more neurotic than usual.

Sam Winchester

Sam was poking at the hat on his head and grumbling a little. This was just what he needed to make his hair look worse.

For Sam, meditation just required being able to get comfortable and concentrate on his breathing. After sitting down, he closed his eyes, and tried to block everything else out.

Since Dōjima doubted Garrett-sensei would let her reprogram the entire Danger Shop to be a club, she went for her second-favorite method of achieving perfect zen: her music.

She dug her headphones out of her purse and leaned back against the wall. Every class should be like this.

We love your brain.

Agnes Nitt

Agnes sat down, closed her eyes, and tried to clear her mind.

Unfortunately, that just let the little running commentary in the back of her head insult her a little LOUDER. Beautiful.

Agnes frowned. That was wizard magic, and she was a witch. The two schools were similar, but... Well, different. Besides, she didn't really know if she COULD hold in her mind the entirety of everything that an apple was, all at once.

Instead, what she visualized was a somewhat simple apple, and a very DETAILED image of what would happen to the podium-thing if it provided her with a less-than-perfect apple.

Summer Roberts

Summer wasn't really paying much attention to the lecture. She was too distracted by the strange hat on her head.

Sam was there too, but he was more concerned with Savannah at the moment than with the rest of the class. "Um. Hey," he said carefully, giving her a friendly smile.

Savannah gave him a tentative smile. She had been told that this was Sam and that they were pretty good friends.

"Hey... Sam, right?"

Usually, Sam meditated to get all the thoughts out of his head, especially when he needed to calm down. So, while focusing on one specific thing wasn't that different, it still took a few minutes before he felt comfortable enough to put his hand on the podium, and he was very pleased when he got his apple.

"Yeah, hi," Sam said, smiling more. "I wanted to see how you were doing. Eve mentioned yesterday at cheerleading practice that you got hurt."

"I'm a cheerleader?" Savannah asked. Had they told her that? She smiled sadly. "I seem to have hit my head and I can't remember a lot."

Sam got a lot more concerned at that. "You're one of the captains," he said helpfully. "You're a great cheerleader."

Harry Dresden

It was hard to meditate, Harry soon realized, when you had a ridiculous hat on your head. Bob had called it FIERCE this morning. You could even hear that it was in all caps when he said it. Harry just thought it was ridiculous, but he was going with it. Wizards were supposed to have hats, according to popular belief. This hat just happened to be less pointy than the norm.

Harry, and his hat, approached the podium warily.
Depending on technology was risky at the best of times and magic almost never mixed well with sophisticated machines. His apple was likely to turn out as a grenade, or a hedgehog, or an avacado.
