She was more than glad to see, as her students streamed in, more than a couple familiar faces and quite a few new ones. After the heavy lecture of the last class, she was rather excited for this one. Oh the plans that she had...

"Well," she said as she stepped away from her desk, her blue corduroy walking dress swishing ever so faintly in the morning sun, "you've come to this class, I should like to hope, to learn the very basics of thaumaturgy. Were you to be interested in pistolry, this would be comparable to learning to build the contraption. Should you have been interested in dance, this is where you would learn the steps.

"Thaumaturgy is a complex art, to be sure, with many schools and branches and ideologies mixed into it but there is, at it's heart, a logic and a methodology, else it should be very hard to teach, don't you think?"

She didn't wait for an answer, but went on.

"I myself hold a doctorate in the subject, but my area of expertise is in forensic sorcery. My schooling was done with many of the Teutonic masters and so I admit that there might be something of a slant; I shall do my best to correct this should it become anything like a problem. For today, however, we shall of course be doing introductions and I will be handing out the syllabus and a small survey."

It's MAGIC!

She's not a terrible stickler, but if your conversations get too loud or involved, she will start poking her nose in. It's the first day, though, so that would be pretty loud and pretty involved, though.

"If you would take one of these (http://brandyforapples.livejournal.com/10482.html#cutid2) and one of these. Keep the first and fill out the second, fold it up, and pass it to the front by the end of class, please."

For reasons I would prefer to remain private, it would be in everyone's best interest that the subject of _________________ not be raised or taught in this class for the protection of myself or other persons on these grounds.

"Honesty, please."

"My name, as you might have picked up, is DCI Abigail Irene Garrett. I come to the subject as a Doctor of the Thaumaturgy School at Oxford, with degrees in Forensic Sorcery and Lesser Alchemy. I am a servant of the Crown working in the New World, America as it were, and currently my duke has decided my best use would be here."

She smiled at them even if that bit still stuck in her craw something fierce.

"If each of you could give your name, some explanation as to where you're from, and your knowledge of the subject at hand, that would be sufficient."

"If anyone should like to act as my teaching assistants for this course, I will of course be taking some. One or two depending on the interest."

And so she was there, all during class and some after for anyone who might want to speak to her.

Molly took a syllabus, and then studied the survey, almost in confusion. She knew almost nothing about thaumaturgy, or the things that could occur, or that she had anything to worry about in that area. So she left the survey blank, but handed it back anyway.

"I'm Molly," she said, glancing around at everyone else as if wondering what they could do, magically speaking, "I'm from Chicago, um, a couple of years ago, and I know, well, pretty much nothing about any of this."

"Pretty much nothing?" she asked, obviously curious as to why the girl admitted ignorance in such a manner. It hinted at more knowledge than she might realize she had and Abby Irene was hoping to prod that productively.

"Well, that fills one slot," she said with an smooth smile.

"I'm glad to see you again, my dear. How were your holidays?"

Savannah smiled. "Thank you. I had a very lovely holiday, Ms. Garrett. How was yours?"

Chris Halliwell

Chris entered the important dates from the syllabus into his day planner and then studied the second form.

He couldn't think of anything that would fit the category, so he left it blank and turned it in.

"I'm Chris Halliwell, I'm from San Francisco, circa 2021 and aside from knowing it's some type of magic, I don't know anything about this subject," Chris said.

Dōjima Yurika

"It's another term for the study of magics. Taken from the Latin for 'miracles', it is the broadest term available."

She smiled.

"Though we're very glad to have you, Chris, even if this is your first experience learning about it. May I ask what encouraged you to take the course?"

"Exceedingly lazy," she admitted with a brief laugh.

"Well, not quite, as Mary was home for the holidays with her sister, but lazy enough."

"Ohaiyo!" Dōjima said, waving a little. "Dōjima Yurika, from Tokyo."

"I'm here because I've been informed I'm going into, ano," Dōjima had a hunch that calling herself a Witch Hunter during the class introduction would probably not go over well. "Magical law enforcement upon graduation."

There. Nice, neutral, completely true, and not touching on her real job at all.

"I'm from a magical heritage and wanted to learn as much as I could about different forms of magic," Chris explained.

She smiled.

"Very good. Is that heritage something you feel comfortable discussing?" she questioned, peering at him as her finger tapped her chin.

"I only ask as some familial traditions are unique and might bring another dimension to class discussion."

"Oh, sure," Chris said. "My family has always been comfortable discussing our magic here."

"I believe I recall you mentioning that at some point," she said, leaning back to sit on her desk.

"As I am in the business myself, obviously, do feel free to come to me with any questions you might like to ask, after class or during my office hours. Very nice to see you again, Miss Dōjima."
