Hands-On Art, Class #11, Period 1

"Well, class, we're nearing the end of the semester, and so this week we're going to do something of a group project, kind of but not sort of," said Lily at the start of class. She gestured to the sheets of butcher block paper hung from the walls. "We're going to make a sort of class mural. Find a place on the wall to paint, using whatever you want to make whatever you want. When you've gotten it the way you want it, you can find another spot to do your own thing again. You can try to adapt what you're doing to look good next to someone else's, but we're not worried about things looking uniform. Just don't mess up anyone else's work.

"By the time we're done, everyone will have left their own little individualistic mark on something everyone had a part in," she finished up. "So if there are no questions, grab your brushes and get to work!"

Claire listened. This was kind of hokey, but it sounded like fun.

Ned didn't mind this. His stuff could be in a group of other things so it wouldn't stand out or be put under a microscope.

Ned found a spot in the corner and started painting what he hoped looked like a pie, complete with aroma waves.

Claire selected a spot on the paper and started sketching a big, old house that reminded her of home. Someone must have felt unusually perky; even the colors she was using were sunnier than usual.

Sokka picked a wide swath of paper and proudly painted a bloated, diseased amoeba a picture of the island.

How Katchoo managed to not roll her eyes and feign sticking her finger down her throat was a minor -- okay, no, you know what? She totally did.

Peyton had just spent the better part of the last three days working on a huge mural for the theatre. This was about the last thing she wanted to be doing today. She sighed and began sketching out a paint-covered Peyton sleeping on a very colorful bed. Sooo what she wished she was doing right now.

Katchoo, after giving it a great deal of thought (which was to say about three seconds of highly concentrated, eyerolly thinking), found a corner, and used a brush to cover one hand with paint. Funny how the handprint she left seemed to be missing a thumb. And an index finger. And a ring finger. And pinky finger.

What? Art was supposed to be about expression, right?

. . . eh, someone could paint over it for all she cared.

Peter worked on painting without his powers kicking in. He didn't need any surprises today.

Peyton smiled at him. "How's it going?"

"Okay," Peter said. "Sam's still trying to act like he's at fault for what happened."
