Hands-On Art, Class #7, Period 1

"Hi, there, class," Lily greeted everyone as she closed the door behind the last person. "Hope you all had fun last week, and really, I think you all get extra credit in not giving me anything I'd potentially have to explain to my boss.

"Today we're going to be working on people. And people are so hard to draw sometimes, they really are. When I first started it was always hard to get the necks right. Everyone looked vaguely descended from giraffes for a while there. Everyone's going to have their own way to draw a person. They might look realistic, or they might look cartoony, or it might be something that would make Picasso go 'What the hell'. One way to do it is to look at people as a series of shapes. You know, like the head's an oval, the neck is a square, the body is a rectangle," she said, demonstrating on the board as she spoke, "and just whittling things down from there. So if you're not sure what you're doing, try that out a bit. Whoever's next to you? Draw them, on two conditions: no stick figures, and this is not nude art, you're teenagers, I know that thought popped into at least one of your brains there. Now have fun."

People had always been a favorite subject of Angela's. With any luck, that would mean that she'd do justice to anyone she ended up drawing today.

"I'll do my best to look extra drawable for you," Angela said, nodding her confirmation cheerfully.

"It's been way too long since I had a live model for this sort of thing."

Ned...got a little insecure about his head as soon as they were set to work. He hoped it wasn't too big.

Claire had the baby for sex ed strapped to her in a sling, and she rocked it a little as she approached Ned. "Hey, mind partnering up with a mom?"

"When did you become a mom?" Ned asked, eyes widening.

"When your girlfriend handwavily handed Keith over," Claire said. "It's a doll for our sex ed project. Kinda cute when it's not crying."

She turned the baby so Ned could see its sleeping face. "See?"

"Oh, that's...yours and Kaylee's?" he asked, peering at the baby but careful not to get too close lest he knock it out of Claire's hands. "Keith?"

"I guess I named it. Keith is this guy I know at home," Claire explained with a little shrug, keeping a firm grip on the doll.

"Kaylee said she was going to try to do something to make it cry less? And I think it might have worked."

"She fixed the baby?" He couldn't help but laugh at that. "It's...kinda cute."
