Hands-On Art, Class #7, Period 1

Lily looked all refreshed when the kids got to class today. "Hey, guys. Hope you had a good break week. And just in time for you guys to start stressing about Parents Weekend. That's nice."

Moving on. "Today we're learning about abstract art, which is basically some of the weirder art you'll see," she said. "You really started to see it in the nineteenth century, when people started paying more attention and artists could start getting wackier. This is the basis for cubism, which was a movement started by Picasso. So take that as you will."

She passed out a handout showing several examples. "So if you take a look at this, this is the fun stuff, where you might just get an entire canvas painted blue, or lines drawn on a blank sheet. It doesn't have to have any real subject matter. You're not looking at anything and trying to make it work. It's just completely creative. We're working strictly with paints and canvas today, so start slapping colors on there, see what happens."

Splashing pretty bright colours on a canvas? Angela could definitely work with that, and picked out a nice sunshine yellow to kick it off.

This was easy enough. Ned picked up a paintbrush and just started slashing bright colors across his canvas. He hoped he didn't accidentally create a good picture when he was going for something not good.

Peyton's canvas was mostly black with a few angry slashes of red.

Claire went to work splashing paint across the canvas, trying to get the colors to balance nicely. Abstract art wasn't her favorite, but she could do it for class.

Claire watched Peyton work for a while. "Who pissed you off?" she finally asked, curious. She'd done the angry art thing enough to recognize it from someone else.

Peter started with blue and got to work. He hoped to stay abstract and not veer off into something prophetic.

Peyton looked over at her. "Me, mostly," she admitted.

Abstract art was a little too . . . um, abstract for Katchoo's taste most of the time, but she wasn't going to turn down the therapeutic effects of taking literal handfuls of paint and flinging them at a canvas today.

It was messy work, of course, and good thing she'd worn her grubby clothes today. She'd have had few compunctions about taking her shirt off and painting in jeans and her bra, except for that tattoo she was trying to hide.

Claire blinked at the canvas a little. "What, did you kill somebody?"
