Hands-On Art, Class #4, Period 1

When the students arrived in class today, they'd find several possibly familiar-looking reprints of some paintings tacked up around the room, and a Lily waiting for everyone to show before speaking.

"Hi, guys, Hope those of you who spent any part of the weekend in the clinic are feeling better, or are at least on enough pain meds to not know the difference. That was a joke," she said quickly. "Drugs are bad." Really.

"You may have noticed our lovely room decorations today. These are some pretty well-known works, some by more famous artists, some not-so-famous, but I tried to go for a good range of different styles. Some of them we'll be studying a little about in class, later, too," Lily went on. "This first one here is Vase with Twelve Sunflowers by Van Goh, who was a little uncreative in naming that one. And then we have Water Lilies, by Claude Monet, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Seurat, and yes, I think that one woman has a bustle, not a ghetto booty. There's The Scream by Edvard Munch, and finally, Nighthawks by Edward Hopper.

"They've all got different styles and were all painted in different ways, so this is more of you trying to find more of your own personal style by choosing one of these paintings to recreate in your own way. Remember when you tried out some new mediums? Hopefully you found something you're comfortable with, so feel free to use whatever you want. Go wild. I have no problem with you taking your work home to work on, either, as long as it comes back here next week so I can see it.

"Oh," and Lily added, almost as an afterthought. "We're also kind of sort of having homework now, sorry. It's easy, I swear. For next week, bring in a picture or a really really good mental image of something you'd maybe consider for a good still life piece. See, easy."

Angela was pretty sure she wanted her version of Van Gogh to be completely mixed media. She hadn't got much further than that in her planning process, though.

She searched out a tub of masking fluid and watercolours and started on a ground. Once she was sure of that part, the rest should come.

Peyton had her head down, not looking around at all. This whole thing about all of your business being reported on the radio for everyone to hear was getting to her a lot more than she would have thought it would. Especially since she was the one with the webcam always on and the podcasts.

But somehow it was different when you were the one controlling what people saw or heard.

Scream it was then. It suited her mood. Hers was rather more vibrant with brighter reds and darker blacks and the face a whole hell of a lot more... demonic... with other similar faces in the background.

Savannah was still achey and tired, but she was indeed here.

There was no blood spouting here!

Just Katchoo, who still had a smudge of paint down one cheek from spending the entire weekend in a haze of nicotine and painting, and thus had no clue what had gone on.

Katchoo was never going to be able to see that Munch painting again without being forced to think of that stupid, stupid Macaulay Culkin movie, so that one was right out.

If she decided she was going to recreate the Seurat piece in a distinctly non-pointillist way, well . . . Lily using the phrase "ghetto booty" had given her ideas, and Katchoo was nothing if not perverse, so . . .

Ned was listening quietly and mentally thinking over the homework. He thought of Digby first but Digby wasn't still unless he was sleeping and that was kind of boring.

Hmm.

Ned peered at the Nighthawks work and chose it just for the simplicity of the design.

Was stick figure art a good medium?

Hahaha, I had that in my head the other day!

Claire listened. She had an idea for a still life, but she wasn't sure how Ms. Aldrin would take it.

Claire chose Nighthawks and, considering, decided to redo it in charcoal with collage elements. She found a stack of magazines and started scavenging through them for pictures that could work.
