Mohinder stood in the simulated outside of the Danger Shop, leaning against a metallic lecturn with a screen. He gave a quick head count as class assembled - matching names with faces.

"Good morning," he started. "I'm Dr Mohinder Suresh: this is physics with trees." The trees were - at least this week - non-literal, the major greenery a hedgerow a few feet behind him. "...and if anyone wants to volunteer as TA they can find me afterwards. In this class we'll be covering as many of the geosciences as possible, but focussing on geography. So I'm glad to see you all found your way here."

"As this is the first week, we'll start with introductions. Name, point of origin and tell me about the last time you got lost." After they had finished Mohinder nodded and continued. "Starting on a small scale, modern mazes are designed for recreation, as opposed to the older labyrinth design - a labyrinth is a single-path maze, with no chance of getting lost - often walked as a guide for meditation."

He punched a few buttons and section of hedge disappeared. "Do try not to get lost."

"I'm Andrew. I come from Sunnydale, Californina, um, not too far in the past from now. And the last time I was lost was..." He tried to push the memories of Hell far, far away.

"...um, this weekend. In the woods."

Andrew had a sneaking suspicion he was about to get lost for real. He decided to hang around the entrance to see if anyone wanted to walk through it with him.

Karal Austreben

Some of the lecture made no sense to Karal, but he listened carefully, Altra sitting next to him, and his recorder running.

"My name is Karal Austreben, and I'm a Sun-priest of Vkandis Sunlord, from Karse," he said, hands folded neatly in front of him. "And this is Altra." The 'cat nodded politely. "The last time I was lost was in a maze some months ago."

Karal walked up beside him, Altra pacing in front of him, and smiled. "Altra says he's not going to help if I get lost, since the point of this class isn't how smart he is," he said. "But we could go through it together?"

Andrew smiled back. "Okay!" he replied, chipper, and walked into the maze. "Which way first, right or left?"

"I think," he hesitated, then nodded, "Left. Definitely left." Altra turned to begin walking in that direction, and Karal followed.

"Think we'll have to answer any riddles or fight our way past mystical creatures in here?" Andrew asked, perhaps thinking a bit too much about Barry Plodder at the moment.

Karal made a face. "I hope not. The last time I was in a maze, Evey had to blow the walls up for us to get out. If this one could just involve walking I'd be very happy."

Andrew was quiet for a bit. "Does she blow a lot of stuff up?" He was still a touch concerned that she might make him the object of her incendiary designs.

"I'm not sure I would say a lot," he replied thoughtfully. "She enjoys working with explosives, and she is very good at it, but she only blows things up when necessary."

"Oh." It was as he feared. "Is she good a disguising the bombs?"

Karal stopped. They were at a junction, but that wasn't why. "Andrew," he stopped, then shook his head. "Whatever you are worrying about, don't. I'm not going to tell her."

"Oh." He liked that word. "Do you think she would be angry?"

"No, I don't," he said, sounding very certain. "And she wouldn't hurt you."
