...or how not to get caught, Period 2, 20 Aug '08

Today's classroom was lined with lab benches, complete with stools and high-tech equipment.

"For this last workshop, we're going to be talking DNA," said Mohinder, standing, sleeves rolled up, at the front of the lab. "Our complete genetic blueprint can be found from a discarded cigarette or a torn out hair; blood, skin, saliva - everyone in this classroom will have left a trail between here and wherever they woke."

"As a species humans have remarkably similar DNA profiles, with only specific areas varying between individuals. From that there's the possibility of identifying biological traits from a person's genetics," he continued, explaining the mechanisms behind genetic testing, veering off into bioinformatics before dragging himself back on topic with a cough.

"But today isn't the time to go into that detail," he said, picking up a swab. "You all have these." Mohinder brushed the inside of his mouth, collecting a sample. "And these instructions to try your hand at finding your own profiles."

"Good luck," Mohinder sat down, saying, "And it's been a pleasure teaching you."

Adah had to admit that she was feeling pretty pleased with the fact that her last time likely to be sitting in a class at this place was for DNA testing and, if Dr. Suresh didn't mind, she couldn't help wanting to play a little with the tech herself. If anything, she wanted to get a hand at the more modern stuff so she could compare it to the likely Paleolithic era technology she'll be working with in a few weeks.

"Dr. Suresh," Adah greeted him with a small nod of her head. "It's my last week here, so I wanted to make sure to get the chance to mention my gratitude for letting me TA for your classes, saving me from a fate of forced manual labor." She punctuated it with a grin. "It's been really interesting sitting in this summer."

Mac was staring at her cotton swab, because maybe a bit of examination might make her more inclined to actually put it in her mouth.

Dōjima was looking skeptically at the equipment as she hung around, waiting for a partner.

"Do you need a partner?" Chris asked.

"Sure," she answered, poking at one of the swabs. "This isn't exactly my strong suit. If I try to do it alone, I'll end up proving I'm a dinosaur, or some other nonsense."

Katchoo had a swab and a set of the equipment in front of her, but well back on the table and out of her reach.

No way in hell was she risking leaving a sample of her DNA anywhere, not when the feds had it on file.

Chris laughed. "I'm a little afraid of what my DNA might reveal, but I'm willing to give it a shot."

"Oh!" Her eyes went wide, and Dōjima shook her head. "Crap. I doubt my DNA exists in this world."

She picked up the swab anyway and quickly took the sample. "Watch. It really will claim I'm some strange animal or something."

"I bet most of the people in this class have unusual DNA," Chris said in an effort to reassure her.

Chris shook his head, though he was also grinning. "Man, this place. I got turned into a pig once very briefly. By my aunt who was possessed by some crazy evil witch."

"Aren't most witches crazy?" Dōjima asked. "I mean, look at Ron. Sweet kid, but he's got a few screws loose somewhere if he's dumb enough to keep poking at Tink-sensei."

"I'm a witch," Chris admitted.
