"Today, we're talking bad karaoke," said Mike as he fired up the first Danger Shop simulation of a performer who had no sense of pitch. "What makes karaoke bad? Singing off-key, messing up the words, and singing something well outside your skill level can make your performance cringe-worthy. Most of the time, bad karaoke is preceded by excessive drinking, which impairs your ability to choose a song that works for you. Folks, you really don't want to be like this. Not only will you look and sound bad, but you have a good shot at getting hit in the head by a flying beer bottle."

Mike started playing the second simulation ~~which does not resemble any sort of Julia Roberts/Cameron Diaz movie~~. "On the flip side of things, sometimes bad karaoke can be pretty good, under the right circumstances," he said. "What helped this would-be singer win over the crowd? Yes, she couldn't sing, but there was real heart-felt emotion behind the song. She was looked terrified at the beginning, but she had some real confidence towards the end. She even managed to laugh at herself. It probably didn't hurt that she was cute as a button."

That's what he's here for.

Worst karaoke I've had to witness? The guy was reading the lyrics off the screen instead of actually singing, and he was ahead of the music through 9/10 of the song.

Then an Elvis impersonator walked into the bar and joined him on stage to finish the song, which made it my most memorable karaoke experience.

Troy was totally not cringing at those performances. Really. Honestly!

I just got back from karaoke, to see this posted. :D Yay, karaoke!

Turtle cowered behind the safety of her covered ears, with disturbed, hopeful concern creasing her forehead.

She didn't sound like that, did she?

After having some water and clearing her throat, Turtle took the stage and hoped she did an okay job (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAs0DOPcATg) of canceling out the bad. It wasn't a well known song, but she had fun with it.

Naomi was listening and trying not to cringe but she wasn't being very successful.

Mike chuckled at the sight of Turtle covering her ears. "Pretty awful, isn't it?" he said, hoping she could read lips.

Turtle just lightly shook her head, the mask of horror remaining firmly on her face.

"There should be a law against this."

"There should, but most of the time, the law of the karaoke club kicks in," said Mike. "Usually the hecklers will hassle her until she gets off-stage."

Watching the performer a little dubiously, Turtle ventured to ask, "Do you think they have any idea they're that bad?"

"Well, the second one seems to understand that she's not going to be a star, which makes her a bit more likable," said Mike. "But the first one? She doesn't seem to have a clue, and that scares me."

Turtle grinned slightly, although the expression was laced still with the faint touch of a grimace. "What do you think the odds are that she's just tone deaf?"

"Those would be pretty good odds," said Mike, smiling. "It's either that or ear damage from all that peroxide she used on her hair."

Turtle's palm met her face with a snort, almost all signs of her distasteful expression evaporated into amusement. "What?" she asked sarcastically. "You mean to tell me that isn't natural?"

Actually, now that she thought of it, the woman kind of resembled her mother...

Of course, even with Grace Windsor-Wexler all the way in Wisconsin, Turtle would not say that outloud ever.
