Networking to Success, Wed, Period 1, (5/28/08)

"Our third class may seem late in the game to discuss dealing with shyness," Nathan said as he passed around the day's handouts, "but I wanted you to get your feet wet on the basics before we started on fine-tuning.

"Shyness is often due to fear of rejection. Unfortunately this can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Shyness can make you act like you're someone not worth knowing - even if that isn't true - and that's exactly how people treat you. After all, you know yourself better than anyone. If you don't think you're worth my time who am I to argue with you?"

"How do you get over it?" Nathan indicated the second handout. "There's a saying: 'fake it 'til you make it.' That means even if you don't feel confident, act like you are.

"Use the tips in the handout to project confident body language," Nathan said. "Pretend we're at a party and you're trying to meet new people. This would be a great time to introduce yourself to members of the group you haven't talked to previously. Act confident, give your name, and start a conversation. When in doubt you can always get the other person to talk about themselves." Nathan grinned. "Folks at networking situations tend to love that. Usually the problem is getting them to shut up.

"I'm here if you have questions."

Collapsy and Confidently!

I think the icon says all anyone needs to know about confidence. Or about how much booze there is in Germany.

Brooke Davis

Brooke listned, but sort of didn't get it. Shy had never been a problem for her. Eh. Easy class then, right?

This so wasn't a problem. Which meant Brooke was sort of idly looking for anyone she might want to talk to.

Chris Halliwell

Chris read over the handouts with interest.

He wasn't sure if he would classify himself as shy, per se. But... he wasn't nearly as outgoing as Wyatt, either.

Chris could do this easy.

Liz Sherman

Liz felt slightly nervous about this but she tried to make it seem as if she was confident.

Shy was never Romeo's problem, but he listened anyhow.

Romeo was ready to talk to whoever wanted to talk to him.

Turtle smirked slightly through the lecture. Yeah. Like shy had ever been used to describe her by anyone...

Cindy Mackenzie

Shyness used to be a problem with Mac... and still kind of was, in a way. Only really with people she didn't know, though.

She wasn't really taking notes, but she was definitely paying attention.

This didn't seem too hard. She thought she was probably about confident enough to pull it off.

Turtle practically radiated confidence in her sleep, so anyone who said she looked shy was a liar and deserved a kick in the shin.

Hyuuga Hinata

Hinata tried not to sink down into her chair as she listened. Even just her stutter would give away how very nervous and shy she was.

Hinata was... just going to stand there. And stare at the ground, and hope that faked confidence well enough.

Her father would be so disappointed in her.

Cimorene of Linderwall

Confidence has never been a problem for the girl who informed a bunch of dragons that she wanted to be their princess.

Cimorene confidently met anyone's eyes who looked in her direction.

Dick Grayson

Dick listened to the lecture, but he didn't think it applied much to him. You didn't end up shy when Bruce Wayne was your guardian.

Too many people in the class showed too much confidence. Because of that, Dick walked straight up to someone who looked shy just in case they weren't going to go ahead and take the first step.

"Have you studied the handouts?" he asked Hinata. "I hear there may be a test on this later on."

Hinata, at least, was aware enough that his approach hadn't startled her. Her eyebrows drew together, faintly worried, as she said, "I d-didn't hear a-anything about a t-test."

"That's probably because I just made it up now. But I did hear myself say it, so it counts," Dick said. "I don't think we've actually met yet. I'm Dick."

She bowed neatly. "Hyuuga Hinata," she said, with a smile smile, "a-and though it's n-nice to meet you I d-don't think Petrelli-san mentioned anything a-about lying."

"He also didn't mention anything about not leading off with a lie,' Dick pointed out as he grinned. "So technically I'm still okay."

"I t-think you're c-cutting it awfully fine," she said after a moment's consideration.

"If you don't tell anyone, I won't," Dick said.

Hinata glanced at him, thought about what the class was about and then considered what Turtle might possibly say.

"W-what's in it f-for me?"

"A lifelong friendship based largely on deceiving other people about something insignificant?" Dick tried. "It's very low-risk, but the reward is very high because I'm an great friend."

"A-and how do I k-know you're telling the t-truth this t-time?"

"I could write up a list of references that you can check out when you have some free time," Dick said.

"A-And if they p-prove false?"

"Then you can tell the world about the test that I lied about," Dick said. "No hard feelings about it, either."

"I s-suppose that's fair," she conceded, since she couldn't think of anything. "F-Friends for n-now then? A-Assuming your l-list checks o-out."

"Sounds good to me. I'll have my references ready next week," Dick said.

"I'll r-remember," she said, smiling.
