Paranoia & First Aid, Period 3, 14 May '08

"Good afternoon," said Mohinder from the front of the classroom, leaning against the wall as everyone filed in. "I'm Dr Mohinder Suresh, this is 'Paranois and First Aid', and I sincerely hope none of you will need any of the skills taught in this workshop." He paused in thought, a moment. "Optimism aside, I can't say that's entirely likely though."

"But first, introductions - I'm sure you've done this in your other workshops, so..." Mohinder shrugged. "You know how this works. Name, where you come from, blood type, and any allergies or serious injuries you may have." Glancing down at the notes on the desk beside him, Mohinder looked back up and added, "And this is where you tell me of any medical skills or healing abilities you have."

After the introductions Mohinder, now sitting on his desk, said, "Paranoia is an irrational fear of danger, even persecution, from others." He leant forward, intent, "The key here is irrational. When the stakes are high and the danger similarly great, how do we accurately judge a threat? Does our behaviour become become paranoid when we can no longer explain it to others?"

Listening, talking etc.

Name, ~~rank, serial number~~ etc, you know the drill.

How paranoid is too paranoid? Is it the same for everyone? Or are your fears totally rational?

Once she's pinged in and listening.

He's just gathering up his notes afterwards.

Chris Halliwell

Chris took notes.

"I'm Chris Halliwell and I'm from San Francisco, California, about thirteen years in the future," Chris said. "I don't know my blood type, I've never had any major injuries, and in theory I have the ability to heal, but I haven't quite worked out the practicalities of it yet."

Adah, of course, was there, quietly available, although she doubted she'd be needed much in this primary lesson. She listened, though, and took notes on the sorts of things that everyone said.

Savannah Levine

Savannah was taking detailed notes.

"I'm Savannah Levine. I'm a witch and sorcerer. I've been kidnapped twice and almost died at least once." She shrugged. "I don't have any allergies that I know of and I don't know my blood type."

Johnny Storm

Johnny was listening and jotting down notes.

"I'm Johnny Storm, from New York City where I am known as the Human Torch. Blood type?" He scratched his head. "Hot."

Gavin Darklighter

Gavin was happily pleased by his workshop choices this time. They'd be really helpful.

"Gavin Darklighter," he said, pointing to himself. "I come from a galaxy far, far away. I was last stationed on Coruscant before being transferred over here. The only major injury I've had was getting shot in the gut with a blaster. Ow. My blood type's A positive."

"Too paranoid is where you're afraid to do anything for fear of someone or something catching you," Gavin guessed. "When it's debilitating. Fear's normal, it helps, but when it overwhelms you than it's too much."

"I'm, er, Jeff," Jeff said, torn between being relieved that this teacher wasn't a woman (hence making it easier to talk) and the grudge he'd carried over from him replacing Professor Next way back when. "I'm from Wales but we were living in London for a bit now and, er, I'm allergic to radio squirrels." Pause. "Among other things. Sometimes I wake up and I'm not certain what I'm going to be allergic to that day."

"How do you know you can heal if you haven't demonstrated your ability yet?" Mohinder asked.

Mohinder nodded. "Do either of your magical abilities have a healing aspect?"

Curiosity had a tendency to get the better of Mohinder. "The Human Torch?"

"I hope you recovered quickly, if not painlessly," said Mohinder, who'd lucky enough to avoid being gutshot. "What happened to person who shot you?"

Johnny nodded. "Yep. Would you like to know why?"

"Jeff," and Mohinder wasn't really sure where to go from there, really. "Are you sure it's just the radio squirrels? How do you get on with unemployed rodents?"

"Fear is only rational if it keeps your head where it's supposed to be. I would imagine paranoia is hard to control or contain with a reasonable sense of self."

"As long as it's not a tendency toward arson, yes," Mohinder answered.

"I don't know," Jeff replied, scratching the back of his head, "I haven't asked."

He smiled. "Absolutely not." Standing, Johnny extended his arm and lit it up, just like that.

"Right." Mohinder didn't take a step back at that, but he did blink. "And you don't feel pain from your fire?"

"Perhaps it's worth finding out," suggested Mohinder. "All knowledge is valuable, and you never know when you might meet an unexpected squirrel."

"Not at all. This is just a sample. I can enflame myself completely and fly at the speed of sound. I can go Supernova but it's not recommended that I do," he said, explaining.

Jeff... really only had one answer to that. "Don't say things like that," he said, feebly.

"On the other hand," Mohinder said, trying to be helpful. "If you haven't already encountered hypothetical unexpected squirrels during your time in Fandom, you probably never will."

Supernova didn't sound like a good idea, not for anyone in the immediate vicinity. "Are you completely fire-immune," Mohinder asked. "Or is it only to your own-" he waved a hand, "-flame?"

"Completely immune," he said and pointed off a ways at nothing in particular. "Start a fire over there and I can absorb it into myself, extinguishing it. I... can also launch fire missles. Not that I ever would. Unless it was called for, but never just, you know, for sport."

"Of course not," said Mohinder, dryly. "Though I'm sure it's a skill that requires practice."

"It used to," Johnny remarked as he extinguished his flame. "Not any more."

"I know some healing spells..."

Adam took notes, glad he'd signed up for this one.

"One of my squadron mates shot him," Gavin said. "I made a stupid mistake and got shot. Someone picked up my slack after that."
