Networking to Success: Wed, Period 1 (5/14/08)

Nathan? Wearing a suit and tie as always.

"Welcome to Networking to Success," Nathan said. "I'm your teacher, Nathan Petrelli. You can call me Mr. Petrelli. That includes those of you who may have a more... informal relationship with my brother, Peter." Why no, he wasn't looking at anyone in particular here. Not at all.

"Unless you're hoping to live the life of a hermit, you're going to need to know how to network. That is, you're going to need to meet people, make a good impression, learn how you can help them and how they can help you.

"With today's class we're going to start with the basics." Nathan grinned. "This is one of the few classes where introducing yourself actually is part of the cirriculum. But we are going to put a spin on it."

Nathan passed around a handout. "Handshakes are an important part about introducing yourself. As you can see, how you shake hands can make or break your first impression. So I want you to go around and introduce yourselves to one another. That's name and a fact about yourself. Doesn't have to be fancy. Where you're from or your favorite hobby is fine. Do all that with a handshake and let the other person do the same to you. Try to get as many people as you can. The more you learn this week will help you with next week.

"I'm here if you have questions. Or you can talk to Lana, who's the TA."

[OCD is up! Go nuts!]

"My name is Andrew, Andrew Wells, and you are?"

"Chris Halliwell."

"Well that's a fantastic handshake you've got there, Chris. Jolly good." No idea where that last bit came from.

Chris chuckled. "You've got a good one too, Andrew."

"Thank you!" Andrew said with a smile.

"So you how you been, buddy?"

"Princess Cimorene of Linderwall." Cimorene responded and tried to do a firm handshake. "Caelum?"

"Yep, A side," Chris confirmed, making sure not to squeeze her hand too hard.

"Oh, you know how it goes around here," Chris said. "My brother got turned evil by a teddy bear and I was a spider demon for a few hours. How's things with you?"

Andrew's smile pretty much disappeared. "I've been worse," he said in an attempt to be optimistic.

"I'm in B4." Cimorene had no idea how long a handshake was supposed to properly last. "This is not how we great people at home."

"What's wrong?" Chris asked, frowning.

Chris let her hand go and smiled. "You did great. Where are you from?"

"Linderwall." Cimorene said, not expecting him to know where it was. "Yourself?"

"It's just been a really emotional couple of weeks," he replied.

Turtle could do this. Turtle had worked on perfecting her handshake since she was five years old. Her dad had always been really good about indulging her and letting her know how she was doing and pretending they were just meeting at a business event, but her mother always had gotten annoyed, so it was then when Turtle would smear dirt or chocolate or mustard on her hands and then offer a handshake to Grace.

Mwa ha ha. Good times.

Well, this didn't seem too hard.

Mac figured you just had to make sure you shook hands firmly... but not so firmly that the other person thought you might be trying to break their fingers. One simple good impression.

Turtle was thinking of honing in on more of the new kids for this than the ones she already knew. She already new them, and, geez, hello, networking within networking!

"Hi, there!" she approached Hinata brightly with a smile to match as she offered out her hand. "I'm Turtle Wexler; it's very nice to meet you!"

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Hinata's eyes widened as she flushed and looked down and tried to resist the urge to bow. Why did they have to shake hands? What sort of--why couldn't she just bow?

"A-ano," she stammered, reaching out to take Turtle's hand in a very nervous and unpracticed hand shake. "I'm Hyuuga Hinata. Hinata's m-my first name, and it's v-very nice to meet you too."

Re: Shake those hands!

"Oh, no," Turtle said, backing off on her handshake a little so that it wasn't too firm, because you'd want to match the shake as best you can; didn't want to overpower the other person. "You'll want it to be firmer than that; that's way too light! People will think you're nervous!"

Some details...were utterly lost on Turtle at times.

"I-I'll try better," Hinata promised, looking mortified, "I-I've never had to s-shake hands before."

Because bowing made more sense.

Dick Grayson

Being a veteran of all sorts of events that Bruce either put on or attended, Dick was an experienced handshaker. He had never thought of his handshaking expertise before today. He thought it was a weird thought.

Dick stepped up to Romeo and held his hand out. "Dick Grayson. Nice to meet you."

"Romeo Montague," Romeo returned. "I am pleased to meet you as well."
