Journalism Class - Wednesday October 5

Outside the door of the Journalism Classroom is a sandwich board which reads:

Emergency Political Headquarters for the Student Newspaper
Free food, drink and computer terminals within.

Inside, Spider is again distracted, working on something on his laptop. The screen behind him is lit up, however, and reads the following:

Attention Students:

Today's discussion topic, as most of you have guessed, is 'Ugliness'. I am going somewhere with this, be patient. I'm also not participating yet for a very specific reason.

The rest of the screens are dark and in the back of the classroom are several large coffee machines, a huge tray of various pastries and sandwiches and a small refridgerator and microwave. Arranged in that area are several computers obviously borrowed from the school lab and a large sign that reads:

George wanders in by herself, surprised that no one else has yet arrived; she's perpetually late to class.

"Hello, Professor." she says almost cheerfully as she takes her seat.

"Ugliness isn't always just talking about physical appearance. Most times it can be referring to actions or deeds.'

Angela waves to George and Phoebe as she takes her seat.

"I agree with Phoebe. Someone can be, like, completely gorgeous physically, but if they don't have a soul that matches..." she pauses, unsure how to finish the thought. "They're ugly," she finishes, lamely.

Chloe comes in and looks up at the screen. "Ugliness? At least that's not as vague as what makes a hero."

Maia sits in class looking around and sighs. i do hope there is a point to this.

"Ugliness is as beauty in the eye of the beholder. You can be pretty with an ugly heart or ugly with a pretty heart. There is some beauty in all ugliness."

"You can find physical beauty in almost everyone, though. Eye of the beholder and all that." George says with a shrug. "Sometimes the most physically beautiful people in the world are the absolute ugliest."

Phoebe nods in agreement. "Exactly. Beauty on the outside can often equate with hideousness on the inside."

George leans towards Angela and says nonchalantly, "Saw you and Marty at Nolitas last night." She smirks. "I was going to come over and torment Marty, but it looked like you guys were having too much fun for me to ruin it."

Angela flushes a little and looks at her desk. It *had* been a fun night. "Thanks for the, um, consideration," she says. "I saw you and Jayne, too, but I was sort of ... preoccupied."

"Are you going to homecoming with him?"

It occurs to Angela that George and Jayne's names are exactly opposite their genders.

"Ugliness is just a state of mind," John mumbles quietly.

Angela swivels in her seat to face Chloe. "You think? I feel like most people could at least agree on the general idea of what a hero is, but ugly is much more subjective."

"Yeah, but at least everyone can agree that ugliness is bad," Chloe says. "It seemed like yesterday, no one could agree whether heroes are good people or bad people or stupid people."

George fidgets with her pen nervously. "No." she answers with half a shrug. "I told him to go with Elizabeth. I mean, whatever. He'd asked her first, so it was only fair."

"Ugliness is not being true to oneself, or others." Rogue takes a seat. "Ugliness, to me, is dishonesty." She fiddles with her gloves.

"Why's ugliness bad? If you didn't have ugliness with which to compare to beauty, would there, in fact, be beauty?" He looks a bit curious, having jumped into the conversation from a couple seats away.

Krycek nods, absently tapping a pencil. "Nothing seems as much of one thing as when you have an opposite for comparison."

Phoebe nods at her roommate. "I agree."

Angela nods and makes a sympathetic face. "That still can't be fun for you."

Angela nods and leans her chin on her hand. "Okay, but ... does ugly have to be bad? I mean, a newborn baby might be objectively ugly, but babies are still generally a pretty good thing."

Chloe smiles softly, leaning back in her chair. "Philosophical thoughts like that have never really been my strongest point," she admits.

Rory strides in and sets a note on Professor Jerusalem's desk. It reads:

I apologize for my absence yesterday. I was detained in the clinic due to a head injury, and I will be happy to make up the work as you see fit.

She settles in the back, and runs a hand over her bandage, content to observe for the moment.

"It's not like Jayne and I are an item or anything, and I never expected the dance to be a groovy, swell time, so..." George brushes a stray lock of hair from her eyes. "It's not like I won't see him there anyway, and we won't be allowed to talk to each other."
