Basic Computing Class #2, [Tuesday, Period 3, 1/15]
Once again, the class met at the computer lab. Mike was sitting at the front of the room, sipping his coffee as he waited for everyone to take their seats.
"Good morning ladies and gentlemen," said Mike. "You can see that the computers we put together last week are still here. Today, we're going to be working with them, but first, we're going to talk about input and output."
He passed out a handout. "If I asked you what two plus two was, you'd say four. But what if I need the square root of two-thousand times twenty-three? What a computer basically does is take your input, calculates it, and outputs the answer. But since a computer can do so many more calculations than you and me, it can do so much more than just solve a math problem. We'll be seeing some of those applications later in the semester," he said with a grin.
"Alright, now it's time to fire up those PCs," said Mike. "Take one of these and pass it around. This will give you some basic instructions, but I'm going to walk you through all of it today." Mike reviewed how the monitor, network connections, keyboard and mouse all plugged into the CPU, then how the power cord went into a surge protector in case any of the students had trouble with it last week. "Once you have that, the next step is hitting the power switch right here, and your computer will boot up."
Looking over the class, Mike asked, "Is everyone with me so far? We'll be covering specific computer applications later in the semester, but for now, go ahead and explore what's already available. Before you leave, I do have a homework assignment. If you don't already have an e-mail account, go ahead and sign-up for one, then send me an e-mail. It's a very useful tool and we'll be using it to communicate assignments throughout the semester."
[Syllabus]
[Homework is handwavey, but Mike can receive e-mails here if you wish. I should be around all day with occasional SP while I run errands.]
