Maths For Real Life, Class 1, Period 1 [1-7]

"Good morning," Jean-Paul said to his students, who might notice he was actually hovering just barely above the floor, with his toes pointed so that he appeared to be standing en pointe, "and welcome to Maths For Real Life. There are certain things your parents should teach you; unfortunately, your parents chose to send you to boarding school instead. Or...you may not have parents. Or you may not be on speaking terms with them. These things happen. At any rate, here we are. And within three and a half years, unless you are remarkably bad at this, your high school careers will end and you will be catapulted into the real world, where you will have to not give other people more money than you actually have, deal with your country, planet, or dimension's version of the Internal Revenue Service, and figure out how many ounces are in a kilogram. I will teach you these things. You are welcome.

"Today, I would like to get to know what I am dealing with. We shall simply have introductions, going around the room. Each of you will please tell me your name, where you are from, and what you hope to get out of this class."

Sitting in her seat with a tilted head, Adah found herself at a bit of a dilemma. One of the things she told herself she was going to try to do this semester, mostly because she knew she probably wasn't going to get away with it after high school, was talking more. However, as she sat there, a notebook in front of her and tempting her with the blinding whiteness of unwritten lines, the temptation to just pick up her pen and start writing was almost overwhelming. It wasn't like Beaubier expected her to talk after having her silent through class all last semester, right? And she'd been talking a lot recently. A regular chatterbox, really. So she might as well...

Adah sighed, setting down her pen. It wasn't like she'd have to give a whole damn biography.

"Adah Price," she said. "Bethlehem, Georgia," and her quiet accent showed it, "1962. I hope to get out of the class what the class promises because I graduate in less than six months; I'm expecting a bit of a rough transition, so I need all the help I can get."

There.

She then prepared to be nothing but a mute for the remainder of the day.

"My name is Cedric Diggory," Cedric said, "and I'm from England. I really don't know a lot about mathematics beyond the simplest of equations and things having to do with spells so I'd like to learn more about it in a general sense."

"Ah, my name is Amano Makoto," Makoto said, tucking a piece of his hair behind one ear, "and I'm from Japan. I'm hoping to learn the skills that would better enable me to live independently from my family."

"I'm Jeff," Jeff said, fiddling slightly in his seat, "Jeff Murdock. Er, I'm from Wales, and I'm sort of good with numbers but my mother never really taught me anything about numbers and I tried to pick classes before she did." Pause. "This is the only one I managed though, she got all the other ones."

Michael's sitting back in his chair, not appearing to be paying as much attention as he actually is.

"Michael Guerin", he said casually. "Roswell, New Mexico. I'm here so I can manage for myself."

"Liir Thropp. From Oz. And I'm here because I'd like to learn more."

That was really the long and short of it, as far as Liir was concerned. He could go on about the Witch and how he didn't know anything useful for the real world, let along math, but he thought it might sound pathetic if not a plea for pity and it really wasn't anyone's business anyway.

Quietly sitting with her slight lean, Adah made sure to take very careful note of the new faces (there seemed to be a lot of them), pay attention to all the little things about them while simultaneously trying to seem invisible in her careful observations.

Green eyes settled on the back of his head, mildly annoyed that someone was acting so laid back about something like this. Only mildly, though. The rest of it was his own nerves.

The eyes on the back of his head - or rather, their owner, since Michael didn't want to blind anyone - soon became the target of a paper aeroplane, thrown from somewhere around waist level and yet remarkably accurate.

He caught the paper after it'd bounced off his arm and pulled it onto his desk. Then he started unfolding it.

If he gave up paper, then why shouldn't he keep it?

There were a few words written in block print on one wing, if Liir happened to notice them.

"Michael Guerin. Hi."

He noticed.

And blinked as he looked at it. Hmm.

Then he wrote something below the greeting and folded the paper.

Michael should find it on his desk in a minute after a very smooth sideways toss.

He did, and raised his eyebrows in vague admiration before unfolding the note.

Liir. Are these notes part of class?
