Interdisciplinary Studies or Whatever, Class 8, Friday, Period 1

Today's class was in the Danger Room, which was set up to look like... a computer lab.

Because Squall was amused by the meta.

"Today, class," he began, "we're going to learn about computers. Because they're important or stuff. Has everyone here used one of these before?"

After that, he got down to the nuts and bolts. "Okay, your basic computer is made up of three parts: Input devices, like, for example, the keyboard. Where you type stuff and it goes into the computer. And the mouse, which controls the little arrow on the screen. Then there's output devices. Like the screen. And speakers. And, uh. Yeah. And in between them is the box where the magic happens. It's all microchips and wires and things inside. All electric. Very few moving parts."

He shrugged. "As for what they are and what they do -- they do lots of calculations really quickly. And run instructions that have been specially coded. They're sort of like artificial brains, except they're stupider but a whole lot faster."

He launched into a quick discussion of how to get around Windows without breaking the machine. He hadn't really fooled around with this universe's computers enough to know more, anyway.

"But one of computers' real strengths is that they can talk to each other," he continued. "If you plug a computer into the internet, you can see things on other computers far away. Get and send information back and forth. Send e-mail. Have discussions. Plan a..." -- What had Selphie planned? A ...party. Thing. His memory was leaking some more.

"...Yeah. So, anyway. Double-click on the Microsoft Firefox icon to open the internet. Your home page is set to Google right now, which is a good place to start, because you can use it to search for things. Type some words in and hit enter, and it'll search the whole internet for pages matching your search."

He paused a moment. "...Well, go on! Try it out!"

[Wait for OCD Yay it's class time!]

Mel pretty much ignored the lecture and spent her time downloading videos from "Dirty Jobs."

"Evie showed me how." Ino offered, "When I first got here, I mean. But I haven't really practised any."

"I've used them before." Or gotten Oracle to use them for her. Those are almost the same, right?

Cassandra was frowning at the computer pushing random buttons and repeatedly telling the system to activate "voice recognition mode". It didn't seem to be working for some reason.

Computers! They were really going to learn about computers! For real! And that internet-thing people kept telling her about!

Rikku was so psyched.

"I can check e-mail!" Rikku bounced. "And nobody really lets me take theirs apart to fiddle with it, which is okay 'cause I guess they're expensive? And there's supposed to be some internet-thing but I don't know how to do it."

All right! The Class he had suggested!

The only thing was Squall wasn't saying how to avoid getting sucked in...

"I knwo computer's okay, but what I really want to know is how do you avoid getting sucked into them?" Sora asked as he peered at the desktop, looking for anything that looked like that thing at Hollow Bastion.

"I don't understand," Rikku said, holding her hand up and frowning at the screen. "What is all of this? What am I supposed to be searching for?"

"I have," Jenny said, "but generally I let someone else do it for me. Oh, and I've killed four iPhones at last count, does that count?"

Jenny eyed the computer, wondering if she could get away with using it to search for porn.
