Detention [Saturday, 08/04]

Hannelore had stayed up all night planning detention, though students might not have realized upon entering the Danger Shop, as it was as sparse as she kept it for most of her workshops.

She'd written on a whiteboard:

Zack Addy
Dick Casablancas
Jim Halpert
Henry Jekyll

and paced while she waited for students to file in. "So, since detention is, you know, a bad thing, you guys get to deal with some of the things I hate like burning, and one of the things I love to soften the blow. It should be fun. I'm here if you need anything, and so is Winslow. You might need him, believe it or not. So...have fun, guys."

"That's it. You have to come with me and have a word with the landlord," Jim said. "I am not for sale."

"I wasn't buying you," Pintsize said with distaste. "Just crossing your palm with a little green."

"I'm not feeling the gay vibe, but if you are, then yeah, guys love the hunchback even more."

Henry frowned. Just because he was being punished didn't mean that he had to be patronized. His next response might have been a bit snappish. "I requested tea. You may serve it with lemon, and without sarcasm."

Reacting, Henry stepped on the wire. He crushed a bulb, but it held tight under his shoe.

"So it's conditional? If I'm not gay, guys hate the hunchback?" Jim asked. "I think you're messing with me."

Henry wasn't happy. He didn't think that such technology had been yet invented, but he wasn't exactly an expert on modern technology. He started to put the suit on, grumbling a little. "If we plummet from the ceiling, I suppose it's meant to be part of the punishment."

"I didn't say that," Faye replied, momentarily thrown off her game. "It applies either way."

Faye raised an eyebrow. "I wasn't being sarcastic. I was being obnoxiously patronizing," she replied. "Learn the difference."

The poor wee robot fell over itself due to the unexpected yank. "Hey!"

"What you were doing was crossing a dedicated employee of this apartment complex," Jim said. "I'm sorry, but you have two options. Stop this party now or you'll have to leave the apartment."

"I'd like to see you try!" Pintsize said, leaping up on the arm of the sofa and trying to look intimidating.

"I'm sorry, but your trustworthiness has gone right out the window," Jim said.

"Do you want me to call 911?" Jim asked, reaching into his pocket for his phone, only to realize taht it wasn't there. He tried to play it like he was just trying for a more casual stance.

"Probably," Jim said. "There's a lesson in there about safety, or gravity, or something."

"Shut up and take your coffee," Faye grumbled, handing it over.

"Yet your tone of voice was inferring the opposite of the literal message. You're merely classifying what kind of sarcasm you were using." Henry tapped his foot. "Just because one does not use the blatantly sarcastic tone of voice does not mean that it is not dryer irony."

Henry took a breath for calming. It helped a little.
"If you please, I'd like to help restore some order. I'm quite sure that if you have a practical intent for this-" he realized that he had little to no idea what it was. Some kind of plastic string? "-string, I could help you achieve it in a much less rambunctious manner."

Henry let out a laugh. It was a little bitter, but it brought him closer to a good mood. "Possibly it is a lesson in the untrustworthiness of authority. In which case, they only seem to be reinforcing the poor behavior with which earned this detention."

Jim took the coffee. "How can I trust that it's actually coffee when I can't trust you at all?"

He was working the fake tears.

"I doubt that's what they were going for, but I'm going to steal that excuse if I get detention next week, too," Jim said. It would be a shame not to use it.

"I wanna blow it up," the AnthroPC told him seriously.

"With what?" Pintsize replied, narrow his "eyes" suspiciously. "Besides, live here."

"Disturbing the peace," Jim said. "You can spend a night in holding just for making this much noise. And I'm willing to take it to that level. It's my duty to your neighbors."

"You're angling for a lot more than tea here, bud," Faye replied, her expression going darker before the woman with the shortest hair behind her popped an elbow at her ribs and shot her a warning look.

"No beating on the customers, Faye," she said, shaking her head.

"I -- fine. Take your tea." Faye unceremoniously slid a cup over, replete with a slice of lemon.
