Sociology of Space Travel, Thursday, Period 6

Instead of Professor Roslin, the students who showed up today would find an obese man in prescription shorts and a t-shirt that really didn't fit him very well. His look of disdain made it clear that he thought he was far too good to be here.

"Your teacher, whomever that may be, is not here today. Instead, you will be exposed to the genius-like vision of me. I am one of the world's foremost experts in the area of space-related fandoms, so you would do well to pay attention and not question me.

Today's lesson is on space-related fiction in all possible media, from the written fiction of Isaac Asimov and his contemporaries to the new Strifenova Celestial television series.

You, the unappreciative, untalented, uneducated masses of the world were supposed to have lists of your favorite science fiction stories, of which I am sure are mainstream, overhyped pieces of badly written fiction not worthy of my attention.

Today you will tell me how the portrayal of space travel in your selection fares, whether it is idealized or realistic. Then I will tell you how wrong you are.

Begin."

"Wormhole X-treme," Sam went to what she knew, "and it's a big load of horse excrement. I mean, two-way travel through a wormhole? Yeah, that could happen."

"The official Wormhole X-treme Technical Manual's section on wormhole mechanics has absolutely to do with wormholes or mechanics," Sam scowled back, sure on this point because she had been one of the astrophysicists vetting it to make sure it bore no relation to reality. Although now she was worrying that Felger had slipped some correct information in when she wasn't paying attention. "Two-way dimensional travel through a stable wormhole is impossible, not to mention just plain stupid."

D'anna was both relieved and a little disappointed that Laura wasn't teaching the class today.

Given her personal lack of enthusiasm for the fiction of space travel, she slipped out the door when the sub wasn't looking.

D curled up in her seat with her knees tucked under her chin while she listened to the sub but didn't really hear him.
