Extraterrestrial Civilizations - Class 8 [3/7, Period 4]

Ellie was talking excitedly with the guest speaker for the day, a tall man with slanted eyebrows and pointed ears, when the class arrives. When she finally tore herself away, she may have been blushing just a little. "I'd like you to welcome Mr. Spock from the planet Vulcan," she told the class. "Please give him your attention." She certainly was.

Guest Speaker Spock [3/7]

[identity profile] ec-npc.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Greetings," Spock said as he he stepped forward to speak. "I am Spock from the planet Vulcan. Vulcan is a Minshara-Class planet orbiting the star 40 Eridani A, which is 16 light years from Earth. Much of its surface consists of deserts and mountain ranges, and large areas are set aside as wilderness preserves. Vulcan is much hotter and has stronger surface gravity than Earth. However, its atmosphere is thinner than that of Earth. As a result of these factors, humans tend to tire out more quickly than native Vulcans.

"My people, as a matter of custom and policy, suppress all emotional influence by living lives of rigid emotional self-control through meditative techniques and training of mental discipline. We believe it is better to live by reason and logic, with no interference from emotion.

Do you have any questions about Vulcan?"

Gwynn was listening very closely and it was obvious she was concerned about the lack of emotion by the confused expression on her face.

Naomi had to stop herself from squeeing when they were told who today's guest lecture was. She was trying to focus on what Spock was saying, except well she was mostly distracted by the thought of OMG Spock!. She had no idea as to what she wanted to ask though and so she was mostly staring at him.

Chad's always taking notes. And trying to quell the urge to draw volcanoes any time Spock said 'Vulcan.'

Re: Guest Speaker Spock [3/7]

[identity profile] ec-npc.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"There is no place for emotion in logic," Spock answered. "And if unchecked, strong emotions are capable of doing vast amounts of damage."

Re: Guest Speaker Spock [3/7]

[identity profile] ec-npc.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Damage is sometimes unavoidable," Spock said. "But logic will dictate what path will cause the least amount of harm."

Re: Guest Speaker Spock [3/7]

Spock arched an eyebrow. "I am not an elf," he said. "I am an Vulcan."

"I am aware of the appearance of Elves," Spock said. "Dr. McCoy frequently uses the term to describe me. I fail to see the resemblance beyond the shape of our ears. I do not nance."

"I studied elves from Earth mythology when Dr. McCoy began to call me one," Spock said. "There were many references to frolicking. Vulcans do not engage in such displays of merriment and gaiety."

Re: Guest Speaker Spock [3/7]

[identity profile] cameronmitchell.livejournal.com 2007-03-07 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Cameron was going to take that as a no. "What kind of displays do Vulcans engage in? You must celebrate something.

He buried his face into the crook of his arm and sneezed.

"Does it always work? Trying to not be emotional?" Stark asked. He knew he certainly couldn't manage it himself, and wasn't sure he'd want to even if he could. "I would think it would be very difficult. And unpleasant."

Re: Guest Speaker Spock [3/7]

[identity profile] ec-npc.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
"We do not celebrate," Spock said. "There are rituals Vulcans participate in, however, such as kolinahr. It is a process by which all remaining vestigial emotions are purged and the discipline whereby this is maintained."

[identity profile] ec-npc.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
"It is indeed difficult to be among humans, as I have spent much of my time," Spock said. "They are such emotional creatures, and their actions are hard to fathom at times."

Re: During Class [3/7]

[identity profile] ec-npc.livejournal.com 2007-03-08 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
"It is a lifelong process," Spock said. "The most devoted and trained Vulcan students attain Kolinahr, the complete elimination of emotion."
