Film and Lit, 2/15/07

There was a large stack of comics on the front table when the class entered, both monthlies and trades, next to another large stack of DVDs. Daisy was in her chair, sipping from a large pink mug with big red and white hearts on it, looking vaguely melancholy.

"Good morning, class. Today we're going to look at the tricky, trippy world of comic book adaptations. On the desk, there's a wide array of comics, from your typical superhero books to your less than typical stories about middle aged men looking for love. Pick a book, grab the movie copy, and figure out what worked, what didn't, and what you would change if you were the one adapting it. You'll have to take turns with the media stations."

Indeed, three TV/DVD combos were set up in the back of the room with large, stereo headphones attached.

"You can work in groups or by yourself, but by the end of class I'd like you to turn in an outline of what differences you found between the comic and the movie, and what you would have done differently."

[ooc: as always, handwaving is fine. Don't forget to meta. OCD is going up.]

Nova chose a comic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank_girl) and accompanying movie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tank_Girl_%28film%29) about a wild girl and her heavily armored land vehicle. The girl seemed to be accompanied by a gang of marsupial men.

Hamlet grabs one of the volumes of the Y-People comics, and a random disk of the stack of three movies. His first thought is about just how many characters are all running around at once in these things.

Zero chose Vice Town and the three volumes the movie had been made from. She thought the literal translation from page to screen really worked for this particular comic.
