Science! (Thursday, Period 7)

"Good afternoon, class!" Ms Frizzle said, as cheerful as ever as she bounced and pirouetted into class. Today's dress was covered in lightning bolts, with matching earrings. "I apologise for my absence last week! Don't we all dislike being ill? Thank you, Hikaru, for doing a wonderful job in my place!"

Suddenly, the lights flickered and the Friz frowned. "Oh dear. That won't do. I'm running an experiment on electricity this afternoon and we can't have the power go out."

The power went out.

"Excellent opportunity for a field trip! Everyone to the bus!"

The bus jumped, lurched, shuddered, and was sucked into an open outlet.

"We are now the size of atoms!" Ms Frizzle announced cheerfully from the front seat. As they were sucked down the powerlines, she lectured on the makeup of atoms (http://www.studenthelpforum.com/chemistry/the-basics-of-chemistry-atoms/) and the exchange of electrons that created electricity.

"Something has interrupted the flow of electrons to the classroom. We're on our way to the power plant, which produces electricity and sends it whooshing off to our homes and businesses! Any ideas how?"

"This is a steam-turbine power plant!" she announced cheerfully as the bus was squeezed out into what looked like a big bucket of water. "This is the most common type of power station. Some form of fuel - coal, wood, oil, nuclear reaction - boils water to turn a steam turbine to create -" And here she struck a Franksteinian mad scientist pose. "POWER!"

"Now please, stay in your seats as we're about to get sucked into it."

"Now that you've ~~handwavily~~ seen how a power plant works, you know why there are many concerns about their effects on the environment! But, there have been some wonderful alternatives that have been suggested! Any ideas?"

The bus zipped along cheerfully enough back into the school. "We are now entering the school's wiring system," the Friz announced calmly, pointing out the massive amount of power that went towards the Danger Shop. "Hopefully we'll be able to find out what knocked out the lights in the classroom! Here comes the -"

There was a gap in the wiring where it looked like it had just frayed apart. The bus zoomed off the end and there was a flash and the students were sprawled across the floor in the dark.

The bell rang and the Friz brushed off her hands. "See you all next week, children!"

The exclamation points are a disease! You can't stop!

Turtle grinned, unable to stop herself from snidely guessing, "Government funding?"

"Many hamsters, and many excersize wheels, and a whole lotta caffeine."

Turtle's initial thought was actually 'slave labor,' but she modified it a little to be more...PC.

i think this is as close to a 'sexy icon' as i can get anymore. i got rid of the few others..

Sokka!

"You used magic to shrink us down and now we're going through a hole in the wall," Sokka answered dryly.

Sokka raised his hand and waved it around.

"How does it do that? Make the power, I mean?"

Hikaru decided to take the opportunity to use his invisibility to annoy Turtle and sat in back of her on the bus, sticking his hand through her head several times.

Nova blinked after hearing Sokka's explanation (not that he had a better one). Really none of this was making sense.

"Stop that!" Turtle tried to block Hikaru's persistent hands, but it wasn't doing much good. She turned around glared at him. "I don't know what the heck's gotten into, Hikaru, but whatever you're doing, stop. It's all cold and weird and stuff."

"I thought it'd be a good time to see if there was anything in your head." He also liked the prospect of not being able to be kicked

If Turtle didn't have a sneaking suspicion that any attempts would fail and thus she'd give Hikaru more to tease her about, she would so be trying to kick him right now. Instead, she just glared at him. It wasn't fair. How come Hikaru got cooler new stuff for this field trip than everyone else? Just because he was the stupid teacher's-pet/TA? What a gip.

And then she paused. "You can't really get in my head like that, can you?"

He wiggles his fingers at her and replied in a creepy voice, "You'll never knoww~"

"You so can't," Turtle decided. Although she did doubt herself.

Turtle has no sexy icons. As it should be.

"Whaddaya wanna bet this bus could replace a power plant with no trouble?" Sokka whispered to whoever was closest.

"Now? It's dark." Sokka grumped. "And the bus disappeared. Anyone got a torch?"
