Spy Tech, Class four (01/31)

Wednesday, January 31, Period 1

Back in the regular classroom, M was standing as usual by her desk, ready to begin the lecture once everyone was seated. A slide was projected on the screen behind her.

CLASS THREE: ABSENCES
JIM ELLISON

"I want to first congratulate all of you on making it through last week's exercise without killing yourselves. Although a couple of you --" She looked at Annette and Jake. "Came close. Today we'll be discussing the concealment of weapons, specifically their concealment within other, less suspicious items. I'll ask Blank and Santos to demonstrate the items I have here."

On the desk were two seemingly innocuous-looking items -- a black bowler hat and a black umbrella. However, as Nadia and Marty soon demonstrated, the bowler was actually lined with metal and contained a sharp cutting edge in the brim, and the handle of the umbrella contained a slender but wicked sword.

"Today for our discussion, I want you to come up with suggestions on how you could take one of the everyday items you are carrying with you right now, and conceal a convenient and servicable weapon within it. Think carefully about this, because it will lead into your homework assignment.

Before you leave class today, come up to my desk and pick up your developed photographs from the infrared camera assignment. Some of them were very good, a few of them were odd, and one or two of you may now be on my 'watch list'. No, I'm not going to tell you who you are."

HOMEWORK: Write a description of your own design for a concealed weapon, with the stipulation that it is not an explosive. Explain how the concealment operates, and how the weapon is utilized.

Setsuna's essay was short consise, extouting the fact that water and technology rarely mixed effectively, with a small section discussing how water clouds both sound and sight.

Setsuna smirked a little; who really needed a sword in their umbrella if they knew Iron Umbrella technique? Which she did.

And then she considered what she was carrying today. Notebook, pen; she tended to travel light. She held up the pen and ruminated on it. "I suppose you could conceil a poisoning agent in the cartridge of a pen," she suggested, "so long as you don't forget that it's in there and try to use it or something like that. Also, notebooks could be good for hiding ninja stars, but you have to be quick in getting them out. Leafing through a notebook for your missiles would probably raise a bit of suspicsion, I imagine."

Marty grabbed the hat and put it on his head. "First: Item of outdated apparel or deadly weapon? You decide."

Annette handed over her essay; it was a couple pages typed, well written, mitigating on her ideals about underwater technology.

Then she sort of hid behind her hand. I did not almost kill myself! Those explosives had to be rigged! Blink. Blink.

Nadia selected the umbrella and tapped it thoughtfully on her hand. Then she reached out with it to hopefully knock the hat off Marty's head with a single sharp tap from the end of the (unsheathed) umbrella.

"I'm not sure this thing actually needs to contain a weapon. . . ."

Nadia? Also here. Also looking tired. Totally not actually asleep at her desk after the demonstration.

Right, like she'd fall asleep in M's class? She's probably just resting her eyes.

Dick handed in a so-so essay about how water and eletronic devices rarely mix.
