Spy Tech, Class One (10 Jan)

Wednesday, January 10, Period 1

The classroom is arranged in a standard tiered format. At the front of the room is a large projection screen, and what is obviously the teacher's desk set off to one side. A small woman who may be in her sixties or seventies, dressed in a neat navy blue suit, is standing next to the desk. She has a stern expression, and watches each student carefully as they enter.

"Good morning," she says, when the class is assembled. "This is 'Spy Tech', and I am your teacher. You may address me as "M" or "ma'am", or if absolutely necessary, "Professor". You are expected to sign in for class each morning, to answer questions when asked, and to complete your assignments. Failure to attend will result in disciplinary action. Horseplay or other disruptive activities will also result in disciplinary action. My assistants for this class, Nadia Santos and Martin Blank, will be available to offer assistance to those of you who require it. You may also come to my office hours, which will be held on Thursdays, or schedule an appointment to meet with me. I believe you'll find that my expectations for this class are not unreasonable, so long as you are all willing to apply yourselves. Does anyone have any questions?"

Once the questions are asked and answered, M picks up a remote from her desk and turns on the projector. A slide is projected on the screen behind her, with the following text, which she also reads aloud:

Q: What is 'spy tech'?

A: The technology that is developed and/or adapted specifically for use in the espionage industry. 'Spy tech' can range from a simple recording device disguised as a cigarette lighter, to an elaborately retrofitted vehicle, to a weapon that can be dismantled and concealed inside other objects. The common thread is that these items, while based on the ordinary technology that we all use every day, are designed to provide the espionage professional with specialty equipment that makes his or her job easier and less hazardous.

Q: How is 'spy tech' used?

A: Espionage technology is used in a wide variety of circumstances. Communication, transportation, surveillance, intelligence gathering, defense, personal safety, and yes, assassination.

"Now, I want each of you to introduce yourself, and to tell me why you decided to enroll in this class."

Once the class discussion is completed, M instructs Nadia and Marty to hand out copies of the syllabus. Another slide appears on the screen as well.

Assignment:

Write a brief essay on one item of technology that could be adapted from everyday use for the espionage world. Explain how it would be adapted, and what would make it useful.

[ooc: A note about M: she's much nicer than she appears to be, although you'll have to look carefully to see past the stern exterior. And she means what she says, she will give out detention or other punishments liberally. However, I will contact the player OOC in advance if M decides detention is warranted. Also, any snarkiness on M's part is entirely IC, and does not reflect my own views as a player. :)

Please wait for the OCD threads are up. Have at!]

"I'm Martin Blank. I'm taking the course because I've had some experience in espionage, and I want to improve my skills and keep up with the latest technology. Also because I'm now a TA and you can't give me any lip."

"It's good you're in here." Parker smiled happily. "Back up notes."

"My handwriting is illegible." Broots reassured her, not mentioning that he typed.

"Krycek. I have some experience in espionage and I'm curious as to the latest developments as well as alternative methods."

Parker can smirk at this, though.

Anders waved back.

Just as stiffly as yesterday.

"That would keep it nice and subtle,"

Parker would facepalm, but since Bel's not here, she glares, then rolls her eyes, shaking her head as she sits down.

I still have the tranquilizer gun... hmmmm..... I wonder what the dosage would be now that Bel's human?

"Please, that stuff is so tacky."

Nadia had no idea what wainscoting was. It just sounded tacky.

Anders gave her a perfectly innocent-looking smile.

Anders wasn't exactly sure what it was either. He'd just heard it on a few of those DIY-home improvement shows.

"Yeah, well, it'll come in handy when you're spying on someone with bad taste."

Parker sighed, and gave him a 'what the hell' smile back. Moron. Tranqing Daisy wouldn't even help. Bah.

She tried to go back to her resolution about letting people clean up their own messes. Yup. Definitely. Not. Her. Problem.

Re: Class Discussion

[identity profile] cantgetnorelief.livejournal.com 2007-01-10 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
"Doesn't mean you shouldn't keep your options open," Anders argued. "Some people have a prejudice against ceiling fans. They're tearing them out all the time on that one show with the key-swapping."

"Well, duh, they don't want anyone else capitalizing on the money they're making by televising it. So they have to get rid of the fans because they might have bugs in them."
