Applied Science - Thursday, Period 2

"Hello there!" The man was dressed in an open-collared white shirt and slacks. "I was meant to be here a few weeks ago, when your teacher had to leave, but my boat ride here was side tracked. That seems to happen to me a lot. I'm the Professor, and I'll be your substitute this week.

Applied science is a fine discipline. Science is a wonderful thing, and to apply it to real life situations is something I've found to be very handy over the years.

At the front here, you'll find all the supplies you would normally find on a small, deserted island. Coconuts, pieces of shipwreck, basic electrical supplies and natural materials. Consider yourselves stranded. Now use your knowledge of basic science, and your ingenuity, to build something that will help yourself and your fellow castaways during your island stay. I'm here if anyone needs any help."

[OOC: Feel free to mod the contents of the box, but keep it simple and as believeable as the supplies were on Gilligan's Island.]

Shawn, not really having any grand ideas, just starts digging through the possible components in the hope that something there will give him a sudden spark of ingenuity.

Zack picked up a several coconuts, some copper tubing, wires and a few batteries.

And a notepad. He was going to have to work the math on this very carefully.

And why did I never think of this class for Shop?!

Since Conner was really not a scientist of any kind, in any way, he picked up some coconuts, tubing, and vines and ended up . . . well . . . with a coconut-shell bra.

That he so was not going to model.

Hikaru pokes around inside the box, looking for supplies to make a little catapult. You know, to scare away the natives..

Gee, there sure were a lot of coconuts in this box...

After some digging and some thinking, Z took some coconuts, bamboo, and wiring and started trying to build a ray gun. She wasn't Bridge, though, so it probably wouldnt' work.

There was something about this topic being familiar territory that made Alphonse sigh. Well, no matter, at least he had a head start. He began shifting through things, wondering where to start at. A better hut than last time was, oddly enough, taking priority over most things, even if he knew he should have been thinking out of the box.

Shawn shrugged and gave a half nod. "Yeah, but I'm sure something will come to me eventually," he said pulling out some string and trying to disentangle it from a piece of something resembling a telephone reciever.

"An alternative power source," Zack replied, since he got the feeling that 'coconut fireworks' would be considered the wrong answer, as he carefully scraped the insides of a battery out and started mixing it with milk from the coconut.

Alphonse looked up, temporarily distracted from his train of thought. "I think finding an electrical anything on a deserted island is kind of slim," he said. "I think, at the very least, a safe place to sleep and a way to capture or collect food is what you'd need most." He lifted up a piece of wooden... something, rather, it didn't seem useful in the least. "I guess coconuts help with the food bit, though."

"Thanks," Conner said, his face as red as his shirt. "I'm not putting it on, though. It's not my size."

Conner held the all-natural piece of lingerie at arm's length and squinted at it. "I know of a few I would appreciate it on, myself."

"No, they're not," Alphonse agreed, tugging at a rope with a hint of amusement on his face. "Lucky for us, they're not the only edible thing on most islands." He began twisting the rope in a certain way-- what he could of it, anyway, it was a bit small for what he was aiming for. "If there's wildlife, at least traps are incredibly easy to make." Satisfied with the rope, Alphonse set it aside, rolling a smallish coconut around the table with one finger. "I can't really think of anything mechanical you could build using natural materials, unless you're really lucky. Otherwise, trees and plants can be used for most things you'd need."
