The Best Medicine: Humor - Period 6 - Class #9

As the students worked their way into the classroom they would find the usual spread of fruits, breads and cheeses along with tea and hot cider. When everyone was in their seats, Wilson pushed away from the front of the desk, a pile of papers in his hand.

“Good afternoon. I want to start off class with handing out information regarding our upcoming field trip to Las Vegas. Here you will find a list of room assignments as well as our travel times. Remember please that we leave on Friday, return on Sunday and if you receive a detention in one of your other classes you will not be allowed to go.”

Once he had the sheets out to everybody, Wilson walked back down to the front of the room and hopped up onto the desk.

Lecture:

“Today I want to talk to you about the role of the King’s Fool or better known as The Jester.”

Delving into the history of the role and how it was used through the ages, Wilson eventually put up the overheads for the students to take notes, rather than having to read the horror story that was his handwriting.

“So as you can see, the Fool is not so much of a fool. These people were in a unique position throughout history to say and comment upon things in ways that would get any other person summarily killed. Even today, we have our equivalents particularly noted in the late night genre where those comedians of note are encouraged to hold up the follies of government and people otherwise in power. People get away with a great deal under the umbrella of humor, sometimes to the point of abusing that umbrella.”

Turning off the overhead, Wilson slid back up onto the desk.

Class Participation:

“What do you think? Do you think it’s a power that’s being abused? That too much is being blanketed beneath the idea of ‘oh, but it’s just being funny’? Do you think there out to be a line or is it important that nothing in the hu…err…mortal condition be above lampooning?”

Homework:

"No homework this week, just try to stay out of trouble and be on time for the bus!"

[ooc: OCDs are up! Class is in session on the way!]

"Everything can be funny," Cally said. "Though certain things should be treated very carefully when it comes to humor."

"I think that every thing can be funny, I think humor works better to point out short comings. It both softens the blow and adds some extra punch. I also think that you have to know your audience. Because if your sense of humor is so different then the people you're trying to reach, you can drive them away with your humor and they won't see the message underneath."

Lana's really not finding much funny at the moment, but she can't not participate. "I agree with Cally and I do think sometimes they go too far."

Re: Class Participation

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-11-07 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Cally nodded. "It's a fine line between hard-edged humor and just being heartless. One that's really easy to cross."

Re: Class Participation

[identity profile] lovelylana.livejournal.com 2006-11-07 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"And I think it's too easy to use being humorous as an excuse to be vicious. Some comedians use 'it was just a joke' to say really terrible things. On the other hand, if used well, it can be a less antagonistic form of social commentary."

Re: Class Participation

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-11-07 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah," Cally said. "It all depends on how its used. Which means it's sadly all how the individual takes it and interprets it, which means we can't exactly set standards down of any sort."

Re: Class Participation

[identity profile] lovelylana.livejournal.com 2006-11-07 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Right. And what one person thinks is funny another could be horribly offended by," Lana said nodding. "It's very subjective."

Re: Class Participation

[identity profile] sogothcally.livejournal.com 2006-11-07 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yep," Cally said. "Like a lot of stuff. So this discussion won't actually reach a form of consensus, cause that's impossible."

Re: Class Participation

[identity profile] lovelylana.livejournal.com 2006-11-07 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Lana nodded agreement to that. "You can't make everyone agree about what they believe in."

Re: Class Participation

"Well, you can, but that involves brainwashing and that's bad," Cally said.

"There's humor in everything," Conner said, and from his experience it tended to be of the cracked-out kind. "And sometimes it's a lot more true than people want to admit. Doesn't necessarily mean people are going to take it really well if you try and make a joke out of some things."

He smiled ruefully. "I should know."

Conner took one look at the handout for the field trip and just about fell out of his seat laughing.

JD nods at his stuffed dog.

"Laddie here thinks that humor is a powerful tool, and, like any tool, should be used with responsibility."

He nodded sagely. "Oh, and he think there should be more canine comedians."
