Science! (Thursday, Period 7)

"Good afternoon, class!"

Ms Frizzle was sitting on her lab bench with her legs swinging, today dressed in a jumpsuit that wouldn't have been out of place at a race track. She even had endorsement patches, but of course with mathematical symbols on them. Students might have noticed that fact that the hallway outside the classroom had a strip of paper down the middle of it that might have resembled a paved road.

"We're still talking about motion! No field trip today, but today you'll have a chance to let out all that creative, engineering ability I know you possess. We're going to be making balloon cars!" She waved the package of balloons over her head. "Your challenge is simple, class! Construct a vehicle that will travel propelled by a single balloon and at the end of the class -" She thrust a hand in the air, "It's off to the races! I have prizes for fastest car and farthest travelled in a straight line. Pair up if you really want to, or you can work on them alone! Use what you find around the classroom and if you need anything else, talk to me and I'll see what I can do!"

"Alright, children! Time to take chances! Get messy! And make . . . balloon cars!"

. . . or not. Everyone to the racetrack?

Feel free to mod the contents of the classroom, but there'll be things like straws, wooden dowel, milk cartons, styrofoam trays, empty pop bottles, popsicle sticks, paper plates and cups, cardboard tubes, rubber bands, string, old CDs, spools of thread, duct tape, gaffer's tape, glue guns, bristol board, construction paper, markers (to name your vehicle, of course) and, naturally, balloons. Chat while you work, pair up if you want, etc.

Out in the hallway, Liz is waving the checkered flag and Ms Frizzle has her stopwatch out.

"One at a time, please! Balloons at the ready! GO!"

[[Tell me how your car performed.]]

"You're all winners to me!" Ms Frizzle declared, handing around a bowl of candy. "What wonderful jobs you've all done! I'll announce the fastest and farthest in a moment!" She turned back to Liz, who was tallying the results.

[[Seperate comment near the end of class. I'll poke you on AIM for your acceptance speech.]]

Balloon cars! Man, what a ball of fun they are. If you've never built them and need a few hints, ping me here or on AIM.

Blair signed in.

Blair looked over the supplies and grabbed an orange juice container and some old AOL cd's. He loved any class activity that involved recycling.

Naomi selected several items before she sat down and got to work on her balloon.

Yasutora Sado

Chad took a moment of looming over his supplies and scratching his head before he started to get to work. He hadn't come up with an actual plan on what his car might end up being; he figured he'd have more success if he just sort of experimented with a few things and would go from there.

"Hello, Blair!" Ms Frizzle swooped down out of nowhere.

There was a small scattering of cd's as Blair jerked. "Whoa. Hey there, Ms. Frizzle."

Ms Frizzle leaned on her elbows on a lab bench nearby, bouncing a little on the balls of her feet. "I was rather concerned when you weren't in class last week."

"Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I got caught up in this really interesting book and it totally slipped my mind." Blair said. "I'm willing to take detention if you want."

Ms Frizzle waved a hand. "Completely unnecessary! You just didn't seem the type to skip!" She leaned closer. "Have any ideas yet?"

Blair grinned and nodded gratefully. "Yeah, I'm going to use this carton for the body and the cd's for wheels. Do you think that will work or should I chose smaller wheels?"

She clapped her hands together. "Wonderful! Those wheels will be excellent for distance! CDs just keep going and going and going and going and going . . ."

"Awesome." Blair smiled and fiddled with things a bit. "I was going to use straws as the axles, but I don't think they're big enough."

"You could use several of them? Or try something else, like thick dowels?" Ms Frizzle beamed. "Don't be afraid to experiment, try different things!"

Blair grinned at Ms. Frizzle's enthusiasm. "Gotcha, man. I'll try out a couple of ideas."

Tyler Durden

Tyler started fidgeting with some stytrofoam trays and old CDs.

Ranma Saotome

To be frank, Ranma sucks at this. Especially at the creativity involved. He likes beign told what to do~~SONOTDIRTY~~... He looks awful amounts of pathetic as he tries taping things together that generally collapse within moments.

A curly red head peeked over the edge of his desk.

"Stuck?"

"A bit." Clearly moreso than he says. Because all the wheels just fell off.

Ms Frizzle laughed, folding her arms on the top of the desk and resting her chin on them. "Alright! Ideas! What does your car need?"

Edward Elric

"A better mechanic?"

Ms Frizzle laughed. "Precisely!" She jabbed a finger in his direction. "You're the mechanic!"

"So... I... need to find someone else who's better at it..?"

Ms Frizzle shook her head. "If you want to learn, you'll have to figure it out for yourself! Start with the basics. What are the compenents of your car?"

"Ballon, wheels, straw?" And... most likely not enough tape.

"Wonderful! What are you using for wheels and how are attaching them to the balloon?"

"Uh... empty tape rolls? and... tape..."

Ms Frizzle's eyes twinkled. "Now you're thinking!"

John Dorian

JD looked over the supplies, and suddenly his face went blank.

"And the crowd goes wild! JD pulls into the lead."

"Who would have guessed it Phil! It's a miracle of balloon technology!"

"Brilliant doctor, upcoming racing engineer. That John Dorian is really something!"

*Vroom vrooom!*

JD continues to stare into space as he makes a motion like taking off a helmet and waves at a non-existant crowd.

Ranma sighs, sometimes he wonders if he EVER does... "I'll keep at it..."
