Archaeology Club, 4pm, Library

Evie was vibrating a bit, and she'd sneaked in a box of doughnuts from Jeff, God of Biscuts. The Caff-Pow she'd had before she came to the library probably accounted for part of this, but the map spread out on the table had to be part of the rest of it.

"Good afternoon! For those of you who hadn't met me before, I'm Evie Carnahan. I'm so glad you could make it this afternoon to the first meeting of the Archaeology Club." She nodded over to Dr. Jackson. "Dr. Daniel Jackson has graciously agreed to be our faculty advisor. I thought maybe we could just brainstorm today, but we do have three prospective dig sites for this semester that need discussion."

She pointed to a little area where the Wildlife Preserve met the edge of Chimera court. "There used to be a lighthouse here, which was broken by a storm and then semi-demolished in 1817. And over here--" Evie pointed to an area between the Rocky Bits and the Fandom High property, "Used to be a manor owned by the Luckleys, which burned down in 1927. But my *favorite* possible site is over here." She moved her pen to mark the beachline of the preserve. "The Santa Melinda supposedly washed up somewhere along this coastline in 1701."

"Dr. Jackson's going to take care of the paperwork for the first site, but we need to decide which onethat's going to be, first."

Dr. Jackson was here, although he wasn't looking very talkative. He waved half-heartedly when Evie introduced him.

This might have something to do with the concussion he got yesterday.

Janice had handwavily gone off to the library after her morning excursion to Aereopagitica, and gotten a little bit too engrossed in it. As it happened, she emerged from the stacks like someone stumbling out of the wilderness, and caught sight of her student.

"Somehow it wouldn't surprise me that you'd be here after classes, Evie. What's going on here?"

That coaxed a genuine, if slightly frightening, smile from Janice. "You have a club for this? Hell, I'm impressed. Mind if I sit in?"

Of course, she'd already made herself comfortable in a chair, and was eyeing the goodies.

Spanish galleon? Janice wondered if it had been carrying anything valuable. She leaned over to examine the map, carefully eating a doughnut so as to not get crumbs or sugar on anything, and nodded. "That'd be a tough one. The other two look less challenging. Most people'd tell you to start small, but to hell with that. I'd go with the galleon."

"William Kessler, I uh, have no idea as to, emphasis, this just seemed interesting. And actually the Santa Melinda does sound good to me too. With the Lighthouse coming in close second."

"Okay, so, who were the Luckleys? Any kooky stories about them?"

"If there was a murder," Janice mused, trying very hard not to grin with amusement at this very sanguine line of thought of Evie's. "What would be in that dig that would drive a man to murder?"

Evie couldn't possibly have said anything that would have intrigued Janice more if she'd scripted it. "Now that could be worth checking out too," she said after she'd polished off the doughnut. "Nothing like a dig with a little mystery around it."

Those were usually the more profitable ones in the end.

"Zack Addy, I'm going to be a forensic antropologist, and the Santa Melinda seems good to me."

Evie earned a definite apprehensive stare from Janice for the bouncing. "What in hell are you drinking?"

She shook her head and examined the map again. "That sounds like a plan. Can't go barging into a dig site unprepared, after all. You're likely to ruin more than you find -- which I get the feeling you already know. Mud's going to make for a bitch of a dig, but I guess you could look at it as a trial by fire. Sort out the people who are dedicated enough to really want to do it."

Ulterior motives? Not at all . . .

"Hmm, well the eccentric part sounds like fun. But I think an old house like that would be more exciting if it were still standing."

"No probably not. Are there ways to narrow down the search?"

Janice couldn't be sure, but she could swear the chair was starting to sway under the influence of that Caff-Pow stuff. (Mentally, she made a note to track Abby down and find some of it. It could come in handy, on those late nights cataloguing her latest acquisitions.)

"You know your stuff, kid, I'll definitely give you that," she said with a definite note of satisfaction in her voice. "And you've done a damn good job of thinking this through. I can't find anywhere to poke holes in this plan."

Janice would have appreciated the sentiment. And the capital T, if she'd known.

"Luckley Manor it is, and research on the Santa Melinda," Janice agreed. "The lighthouse sounds like it'll be the least interesting of the three. Not a good first impression for the newbies, so you might want to save that for when they're already hooked. They'll have to learn sometime that there's disappointment in this job, but not right off."

"Chad," he lifted a hand. "I just started to get interested in this stuff, and I'd say we go for the Santa Melinda." Yes, he said the name with a particular Spanish flair. He couldn't help it.

Oooh, doughnuts. Chad was always willing to partake in doughnuts.

Not so much with the talking bit, although he does contribute a grunt.

Daniel managed a slightly strained smile. "I, uh, sorta fell down the stairs in my apartment building yesterday," he admitted. "I'm a bit concussed, but it should clear up in a day or two."
