"Well," said Amaya, grinning faintly once the students arrived at the site, which looked not at all like a site anymore at all, but a nearly finished building, "here we are, the last class ~~I think??~~. And I will say, you guys were really great. I hope, if anything, it wasn't a bad way to spend your summer and that you've learned at least a little something, whether you wind up using it or not. I sort of spent the last week picking up all the little things here and there, so there really isn't much to do today. I'm gonna have you guys walk through an end-of-construction checklist to work as sort of a review, and when you're finished, head on up to the roof, where we'll spend the rest of the class enjoying the time-honored tradition of the Lunch Break."

She grinned a little again, and began to hand out the checklists. "Any questions, I'll be on the roof. But hopefully everything checks, and I'll meet you guys up there to shoot the crap and eat some food. Thanks for all your hard work this summer; it's been really great."

Not too bad, right? Just be glad Amaya decided not to follow through on the first idea she'd briefly had, which was to have them all help her start moving her things across town to the new apartment. Sure, Amaya didn't have much stuff in general...but she did have a lot of weapons.

"'Morning, everyone," Amaya nodded a greeting to the students once they were all collected and gathered in the forge space, hopefully by now getting right to putting on their gear. They'll probably likely notice that there were lots of wood pieces and tools waiting for them, so, hopefully, they were in a building mood. "We've made some pretty good progress on everything on the building; there's really not a whole lot more to do, really, except a lot of little things, so today I thought we'd sort of do something a little different, a little fun, more carpentry than construction, but it'll still tie in. Y'see, today, we're going to be installing cabinets!"

Sounded fun, right?

"But we're also gonna be making them first!"

Which hopefully sounded a lot more fun. "Here's what we're going to do," Amaya said, leading into a pretty basic demonstration of how to do it, that they could follow along with in their own construction of the cabinets.

And once they were done with that, Amaya nodded approvingly at their work...or at least their efforts...and then hitched her thumb toward the stairs at the back. "Alright, good work! Let's haul these upstairs and get 'em installed."

And once up, Amaya walked through the process in the space designated with the kitchen. "Now, it's a small space," she said, "so you'll want to either take turns or work together, and if you have any questions, well, you know I'll be right here to answer them."

And, with that, she stepped back to let them work it out, figuring, if anything, it wasn't like she was going to be spending much time in a kitchen, so if it wasn't exactly the prettiest cabinetry, it was no big deal.

"Welcome back," Amaya gave the students a little wave once they'd all gathered on the site for this week's lesson. "Sorry about last week; long story short, always take a second to listen to your packages before you open them. If you hear buzzing...it might be bees. But good thing about this stage in the construction process is that it's a lot of work, but it's pretty simple stuff, like the insulation. And, for today, we're going to be working on the lath and plaster method for walls down here in the shop.

"Now, according to my research, this style of wall-building has gone quite a bit out of style; drywall is used more now, because it's easier and cheaper, so we'll be doing that upstairs in the apartment next week. But for the purposes of the shop, lath and plaster walls are more soundproof, which I'm sure the neighbors will enjoy," despite, you know, a good portion of the shop still being open air, but whatever!, "and it's also better for the prevention of the spread of a fire, should anything happen, since a smith deals with a lot of heat and a lot of potential fire hazards.

"It's pretty easy work, too, though, all said and done." Amaya shrugged, reaching for a frame so she could demonstrate some of the steps, with some before and after examples she'd whipped up.. How to nail the boards on, make sure it's clean, smooth on the plaster. And since it took a long time to dry, they'd notice a few walls were already done, and that's where they could work on the sanding on those until the others were dry so they, too, could be sanded.

"Not too difficult, right? But don't hesitate to ask questions. Let's get to work!"

When the students arrived on the worksite that day, they wouldn't find their usual teacher, but someone different there waiting for them, and didn't she just look so excited about it, too?

"I'm Detective Diaz," she offered, "and I'm here because Ms. Blackstone is sick. Now, usually, a sick teacher means a blow off or movie day, but since that would put this whole thing," she gestured vaguely at the building, "behind schedule, you guys get me instead. And insulation." She hitched a thumb toward the piles of fluffy pre-cut sheets, and flashed them a crooked, sardonic grin. "Aren't you lucky?"

"Now this stuff stings if you get it in your skin or eyes, so make sure you're wearing your stupid gloves and goggles, okay? This shouldn't be too hard; the stuff's already cut, so you just...put it in." And she demonstrated with one sheet, even if it looked more like she was frisking a suspect than anything else when she was fitting it in. "Now, some of it might be short," like the one she just did, "so just pick a small piece and fill it in and just tape it. No big deal. If you've got a wire or box, just cut a space out for it. Again. Easy. Babies could do it."

And then she sort of stood there for a moment. "Okay, then, I guess, get to work? Oh, right, she also said stay hydrated. Yeah. Okay. Don't have too much fun."

"Morning, workers!" Amaya greeted the students when they made it to the site, setting aside something that looked almost like a potato lamp and brushing off her hands. "Today, we're going to be working on the electrical aspects and wiring of the building, so we'll be working mostly upstairs in the apartment. Now, where I"m from, we don't even have electricity, so I'm not too proud to admit that I think this particular topic is best explained by someone a bit more familiar, which is why were's going to start out with a video, "she patted her hand on the tube screen on a tall roller cart quintessential to any school experience, "and then we'll head upstairs and get to work."

Short and sweet today, right to business! She'd even brought in a bench so they could sit while they watched, and there was an airpot of coffee in addition to the usual giant orange water cooler. She suspected it might be needed to help get them through the dryness of the video; she realized not everyone could listen to people talk about wires and hookups in excruciating detail all day like she could.

Way more interesting than mushy stories about welders who wanted to be dancers, anyway...

Construction 102; Third Period, Friday [07/13].

When the kids got to the site for class that day, they wouldn't find anything there but the table of their gear and a ladder leading up to the roof. So it shouldn't be too difficult to guess where their teacher might be. Amaya confirmed it a moment later when her head poked out from up at the top of the building, and she waved an arm. "Morning, builders!" she called down. "Grab your gear, get it on, and climb on up. We're roofing today. Oh, and, please, no one walk under the ladder if you can help it. At least not today."

Amaya wasn't really superstitious, of course, but there was just enough of it in her to make working on dangerous stuff on Friday the 13th was enough to make her a little jumpier than usual.

Once everyone was up and no one had fallen to their death or disfigurement, Amaya nodded, gesturing toward a big water cooler. "Water," she said. "Drink it, often, while you're working today when you can. But when we're not hydrating, we're gonna be finally tiling up this thing. Tiling's a bit more difficult that it looks, but we're going to work through it together, so get ready, grab your tools, and let's get to work."

If Amaya's voice wasn't already naturally a bit hoarse, it might have been by the time she was done with class, instructing and demonstrating as they went along, having them split up to work on the two sides of the roof separately with her overseeing and moving between the two and helping out.

And there really wasn't much too it than that. Straightforward, simple hard work. Just the kind she liked.

Sure, the heat hadn't been bothering Amaya too much...she was, after all, a woman who thrived when most of her day was spent in front of a hot, fiery furnace. But she knew it had been bothering plenty of people, and the heat added to the humidity added to the threat of rainstorms at about the time the class was being held finally pushed her to reluctantly have a class held inside in the school's workshop. There might have been a little bit of grumbling about how it might not be an issue if it weren't for the time change, but even that she figured was probably better for the kids...and the neighbors around the site.

So messages were sent and the students were to meet at the school instead of the site, and at least it was just their first day, so taking it easy might not be too bad.

"Hello," she said, when the students arrived, "and welcome back to some of you, welcome to construction to the others. Glad to see some familiar faces! I was hoping to jump right into it, but let's consider this our first safety lesson: if the weather's unsafe, you'd best take it easy, and we're especially not doing roofing or electrical wiring in the threat of a storm. Hopefully next week's a little more promising, but for now, we'll stick with something simple to get our feet wet. We'll do some introductions, I've got an instructional safety video because safety is something I cannot stress enough, and then I've got a little project for us, too."

With that, her fist pounded into her other hand and she nodded. "So let's get started."

When the kids got to the site that morning, they'd find Amaya already on the scaffolding for the unfinished roof, sitting on the edge and waving for them to join her. "Come on up!" she called down. "I got donuts and coffee! An' don't forget your hard hats."

Not that they'd need them today, she assumed, but just in case.

When they got to the top of the scaffolding, wide enough to comfortably fit all of them, she patted the board and handed over a thermos and a mug to the closest students. "Have a seat, grab a snack,, today's our last day for this semester, so it'll be an easy one. Today, we're covering the time honored tradition of a lunch break on a construction site, which usually entails just sitting around and talkin', because taking a good break on jobs like these is important. When you're tired or hungry or thirsty, you get sloppy, and no one likes that.

"So let's just enjoy the nice day and the hard work you've all done, because you've done a really great job. Now, obviously, there's still a lot more to do, so there's a continuation of the workshop in the second half of the summer, and it'd be real nice to see all your faces again, and I will say this: you guys got all the hard stuff, and I'm really proud of all the fine work you've done. Today's a good time to talk a little about what you've learned, ask any lingering questions you might have, or if there's anything in particular that wasn't covered that you would have liked to have known more about. Or just enjoy the donuts and bask in the glory of all your hard work. This here wouldn't be here without you guys. I don't know about you, but that's always been one of the best feelings for me, to just take a second, step back, look at what you've made and think, 'Well, zounds, I did pretty damn good job!"

She grinned, lifting up her mug in a salute. "So cheers, guys. You done great."

"Morning, everyone," Amaya greeted the class stoutly with a nod. "Sorry about last week, but, as I'm sure most of you have realized, the Island was going through one of its little ...things, and it couldn't be helped. Still, despite the obstacle, you all did a great job. If you need me to go over anything I attempted to go over last week, just let me know, I'll be happy to go over it again, this time even loud enough for you to hear me."

She was smiling faintly, somewhat pained, since fourteen year old her was much harder to avoid the after-effects of than seven year old her had been. She didn't exactly appreciate the forced perspective into her childhood, but what could be done about it? Nothing, so it was best to just move on.

"And today we'll be doing more framing, anyway, focusing now on the apartment upstairs, getting all those walls framed and erected. Second verse, a little different than the first, and teamwork's going to be important here, because those walls are heavy, and we're a little higher up, so the wind's going to play a factor, too. Once you got a wall up...and, of course, I've already got 'em together for you and marked where they go, take turns holding and nailing, and I'll help, too, because an extra set of hands in a job like this rarely hurts."

"Any questions?" she asked, looking around to field any that there might be. "Alright, then," she pounded a fist into her other hand, then quirked her thumb toward the second floor, "gear up, climb up, and let's get to work!"

Okay, so Amaya was starting to get real irritated about this whole weird Do-What-The-Squirrels-Tell-You regimen she was apparently on in this new place. At least yesterday's movie class hadn't been that bad, except for the part about feeling like an idiot in front of a bunch of boys for not knowing what movies were, and the radio thing she managed to foist on someone else who seemed more than happy to do it. This, however, she saw no escape from. Apparently, she needed to teach a class. On building something. That part she liked; that part she knew, but teaching it to other people?

Zards.

"Um..." When it became clear that it was time and the other kids were waiting on her (why? Why her??), she cleared her throat a little, forgot for a second how to breathe, and then remembered with force. "Okay. Uh, so..." She remembered she'd prepared notecards and fished them out of her pocket, which might have made the trembling of her hands a little more obvious. She curled around the cards, her head down, as she read, her voice sometimes dipping so far into a whispered murmur that she probably couldn't be heard very well.

"Welcome to Construction," insert an awkward failing gesture of welcome with her arm and her eyes never leaving the notecards. Stilted, quiet, monotone. "Today, we're going to be learning how to build stud walls for our frame. Stud walls are very easy and very important, you just have to make sure you measure properly and..."

...and it went on like that, a quiet little nervous ramble that she half expected to finish and look up and see that everyone just left. And wouldn't that be a relief! She got about halfway through her prepared notes before the stumbling, the um and the ah stumbling over each other to get out, and then she started messing things up. "No, wait, that's not...that's not right, I read that wrong. Actually, uh..." Now she'd lost her place, where was she? Were these notes even in the right order? Did she mess them up? Panic was starting to rise again.

"Zards!" she heaved a frustrated sigh and threw the notecards on the ground. "You know what? Hang all that. It's walls. It's easy. You just measure it out, nail it together, follow the plans, stick to the dimensions, all the boards are marked already anyway. Okay? Got it? Got it. Let's go."

Construction 101; First Period, Friday [06/01].

Apologies to the neighbors; it was concrete day for construction class, meaning Amaya had somehow found the time to rig the Crumbler up as a cement mixer and one thing the Crumbler always managed to do was was be loud.

"Morning, crew!" Amaya greeted the students, voice rising above the tumbling concrete mixing in the clanking machine. She grinned a little as she handed them each a copy of a lay-out plan, then gestured to the boards and rods of rebar and pipes set off to the side. "Big day today, it's time to lay the foundation, but before that, we've got to set the base. I'd like you all to work together on this, since it's just easier, and I'll be overseeing, of course, hopefully to catch anything before it goes too far off."

So she went over the basics: how to set up the forms with the wood boards and stakes, screwing them in, trimming them off, and using the plans she'd given them to lay the rebar and pipe grid. "Now, all the rebar we'll need, I've bent and cut already, but if anyone wants to take a few moments to use the machine to try a few themselves, I highly recommend it. Working with this rebar is where your gloves and your goggles are going to be particularly important; it's steel, it's strong, so it can cut you up if you're not careful, so please be careful, 'specially if you know you're a bit...erm," Beaker, "accident-prone."

Hopefully the others could manage themselves fairly well, because Amaya was pretty sure all her attention would be focused on wringing her hands around Beaker.

Once that was finished and Amaya checked the level on the forms, she nodded approvingly. "Not bad! Now the fun part, the concrete! Everyone grab a bag of gravel, dump it in, and level it with your shovels, then we're going to give it a good spray. And then in goes the concrete! I've rigged the Crumbler here," she gave it a fond little pat in one of the few spots without any moving parts to the moment, "to keep it good and mixed and to pour it for us, so you're job's just to smooth her out. Once we've got a good layer spread out, we'll smooth it further with boards, and get started on water-curing it, which takes a few days, which'll work fine to get us to our next step next week."

"And when you're done with that," she added, "I've got a little slab set aside over here that I'd really appreciate if you all took a second to leave a little something, a name or a mark or a signature, to commemorate you guys for all your hard work. But for now, let's get to work!"

Amaya would understand if the students might have been slightly less excited to discover shovels waiting for them next to their safety gear instead of the more exciting sledgehammers when they got to work site today, but at least they'd have a pretty good idea what they'd be doing today. She was excited about the shovels--probably too excited--but she didn't exactly expect them to be. That didn't prevent her from being far too chipper for early on a Friday on a construction site.

"Morning, builders!" she greeted them. "As you can see, all the debris from last week has long since been cleared, and I had someone take care of the old foundation of the building that was here so that we can put in a new one, because the foundation is a pretty important part of any building." And here she was having a small handful of kids putting in hers. Anyway! "You'll notice I've already got batter boards marking each corner of the building; that's our perimeter, and I've already marked the lines where we'll be digging our footings and how wide to make them; you'll be digging within those lines, making a trench. We're gonna dig about two feet deep, nice and flat lines and sides, we'll get it nice and compacted when we're done!

"So grab your gear, grab a shovel, and get digging! I've got water and coffee on the worktable, too, take a break when you need to and stay hydrated. Lemme know if there's questions or issues, but if you're ready, let's get to work!"

Construction 101; First Period, Friday [05/18].

Amaya had sent messages out to her students, but just to make sure, there was a note on the classroom door telling them to meet in town at 6 Unicorn Street, between the Trooper Station and the butcher shop. There was a joke about pigs in there somewhere, but, sadly, Amaya did not know it. And she had to give props to the person in charge of scheduling for putting a construction class first thing in the morning; she was sure the students and the neighbors alike would appreciate it.

When it looked like everyone was there, Amaya nodded a greeting. She already wore a yellow construction hat and goggles, and there was a table nearby with a few more of both of those things, as well as work gloves and a collection of sledgehammers. And if that send a little excitement pumping through your veins, then you were definitely in the right place.

"Thanks for coming," she said, "and welcome to Construction 101. I'm Amaya Blackstone, and I know some of you, but not all of you, and I don't know if you know each other, so we'll definitely be doing the introduction bits today. There aren't many of you, which is good, because that means we can get through that and get to the good stuff,. We'll be meeting here every Friday, rain or shine, cats or dogs, unless you hear from me otherwise. And I want to talk about safety first." She patted her hard hat with a gloved hand. "This is going to be an active construction site, we're not doing any of that Danger Shop stuff, so there's a real chance for injury, and I don't know what's covered under the school's insurance, so let's just avoid it all and be safe. You don't step one foot, not even a wee little biscuit, on this site unless you've got a hard hat, goggles, and a pair of work gloves. We'll keep 'em here at the site so you don't have to worry about losing them, and it looks like we're all generally human-," she flashed a glance particularly a Beaker "-shaped so fit shouldn't be a problem. And if you're not feeling well for whatever reason, don't hesitate to mention it, because someone all geared up but not in tip-top shape can be just as dangerous as someone without their stuff. I'd rather you sit out than push yourself into something dumb, or we can find something else for you to do in the meantime."

Probably a coffee run.

"So!" She clapped her hands together. "Safety first, and now introductions! I'm Amaya Blackstone, I own this lot, so we can do whatever we want to it, but we're going to be building the basics for my new shop. I'm a blacksmith by trade, but I like building anything, as I'm sure you'll find out. Your turn, now. Let's here your name, let me know if you've got any construction or building experience, and then, I don't know, one thing you're looking forward to this summer, doesn't even have to be class-related. We'll just go down the line." She pointed to the first student. "Go!"

Once they were finished, Amaya nodded again. "Nice to meet you all. Let me know if you have any questions at any time, too, but now that all that's over, let's get to work! Now, I don't know what the place was before I bought it; seemed empty for a while, but whatever it is, isn't going to work for my new shop. We're going to start from the ground up, kids, which means we've got to knock whatever's there to the ground. Grab your gear, grab a sledgehammer, and let's get to work. We'll start up on the roof and work our way down to cut down on debris falling on our head; be sure to clear everything out and dump it in these carts here in the street. I've got scaffolding and whatnot already set up inside where I suspect we'll need it. Have fun, but be safe. Let's go knock some walls down."

Construction Site: Friday the 24th, all day

The construction site would be eerily quiet if it weren't for the Best of the Beach Boys playing at this week's typical volume level. The halls and grounds are clean and empty of equipment and supplies, except for a table full of picnic supplies, and a rack of hard-hats standing next to it.

"You know, I think we ended up with a school here," Xander says, managing a grin despite the nearness of the fruitbat who's claiming to be in charge of said school. "Much as we'd like to keep putting you to work, we seem to have run out of it. So for your last day on the job, your assignment is to grab a helmet, sammiches and chips, and take a look at what you helped put back together, because you rocked the house, guys."

The smile vanishes when he adds, "But stay the hell away from the Principal's Office. No matter how trouble-proof you think you might be. Consider that your final safety lecture of the summer."

Fraser's mostly distracted today, head bent over a clipboard and face etched in a thin line. He does smile and nod at those arriving at the construction site but quickly goes back to the clipboard and scribblings he'll be pouring over for the rest of the day.

If you noticed a Xander-less construction site for most of the morning, you weren't imagining things. It took him a while to hop there from MCA.

He really should have called somebody and asked them to put up a sign, but he might be just a little stubborn. Maybe.

There's paintbrushes, there's a grim-faced guy sitting next to the paint-cans looking lazy but he's not, and there's still music playing. Loudly.

Continuing with the theme, there's paint, brushes and rollers set out for the painting job to continue. There's also the very loud, very ear bleedy sound of My Heart Will Go On being piped through the sound system.

Even Fraser's wincing in pain at that.

Construction: Monday August 20th, All Day

Laid out for the workers is an array of small projects involving screwdrivers, paint and brushes, tar and shingles - anything that, unlike last week's efforts - won't make noise.

While there's still large machinery around that could be used for that, Xander's decided to step down that aspect of the ... thing that is not in any way an annoyance campaign. Wouldn't want people to get used to it and start to tune it out.

Instead, the construction site is completely silent.

Except for the boom-box directly under a certain window.

Playing Ever The Same.

On repeat.

When the workers arrive, Xander just holds up a finger to his lips.

Construction [Friday]

Fraser decided to continue Operation Test the Equipment for one day longer. So, the construction site is alive with noise this morning and Fraser looks quite pleased with this development.

To add his own personal touch onto the project, he's also told a few of the construction workers to bang intermittently on the walls outside of a certain office with the excuse of testing the foundation and how sturdy the rebuilt walls were. They were more than happy to oblige.

The safety gear is out and the construction site is open.

This week's "Test The Equipment" project seems to be going so well that Xander doesn't see any reason to put an end to it.

New earplugs have been provided, though. In a rainbow of fruit flavors ~~and disturbing shapes~~.

"These guys are designed to block out the loud sounds and still let you hear people talking," Xander tells the workers. "Just in case this place has been giving you a sore throat from all the yelling this week. Not that you have to let other people know that, if anybody comes around complaining about the noise."

Since he'd passed by the construction site yesterday and was able to pick up on what Xander was doing (and so well, mind you), Fraser gave the order to keep up the noise, the sounds, and to keep them up as loud and as long as they could.

When the students arrived, Fraser waved and pointed to the safety equipment. It was far too loud to talk.

Xander? Bitchily grim as he walks around pointing out various pieces of Very Loud Equipment?

"So yeah, today's job? Test all the equipment. Power drills, saws, cement mixers. Gotta make sure the stuff is still running when we send it all back." It may not make enough noise to bother Umbridge or even get her notice, but every little bit helps, right? Plus if anybody's trying something else, every distraction helps.

When Fraser arrived on scene and got up to speed, he couldn't help smiling at what Xander had done on Friday. And Fraser made absolutely no move to fix it. After all, if Xander thought those vents needed to be closed then they definitely needed to be closed.

"Good morning," Fraser said brightly, "and excellent work on the air vents. We're going to leave them just like that for the time being. I think a few days of them closed will be most beneficial. Please don your safety equipment and return to what you were previously working on before the air vent emergency."

Construction: Friday, August 10th, all day

Xander was in the building looking over the cleaned-out ventilation system early enough to hear the announcements this morning, so he's well and truly scowling by the time the construction folks get in.

He's scowling over the blueprints to said ventilation system, though, and there's an occasional thoughtful smirk.

"Looks like we need to make a few repairs to the central air, guys," he says.

After puzzling over the morning announcement for awhile, Fraser's finally made his way out to the construction site. Seeing the progress Mr. Harris made yesterday cheered him slightly. The new principal - headmaster - whatever her title hadn't yet said anything about the reconstructed school so Fraser decided to count the blessings he had.

"Good morning," he said, nodding. "I think we can all ignore that new rule that was stated this morning in deference to having to put our school back together. If you get in trouble, tell her I said it was all right for security reasons. Equip yourselves and get to work."

Fraser smiled and wandered off to do some of his own work.
