Let's Play Tourists!, first period

Posted by: intheeyeofthebeholding

Jon had <s>handwavily</s> advised everybody to wear warm-weather clothes and be prepared to swim if they were so inclined. He met them at Portalocity with a large box that contained assorted <s>moddable</s> hats and wraps, towels, and enough tubes of sunscreen for everybody to have two.

"When you're out on the water, you often end up burned despite your best efforts, so everybody please be careful and wear enough of this." He was an Englishman who grew up in a beach town. He knew the benefits of not burning!

"This weekend, a lot of places will be celebrating Pride, which is a way of acknowledging that people of different sexualities and gender identities are all worthy of being people, which is somehow still a radical idea for some." Because people were idiots.

The portal opened to someplace very sunny. "We'll be visiting Key West Pride today. Key West is the southernmost point of the continental United States. It began as a place of the rich and conversely, scavengers. Because some rich people are bad at sailing. It largely thrives on tourism these days, and declared its independence from the US when the government interfered with that in an effort to keep people from entering the country illegally. Apparently, they threw bread at the Coast Guard."

Why bread? Who knew!

"Anyway, it's a rather...er...laid-back place, I suppose you'd say." Look, when your two most famous residents were Jimmy Buffet and Ernest Hemingway, you got a reputation. Largely for booze.

"We'll be going on a boat trip. There will be lunch, drinks for anyone old enough, and swimming if you're able and so inclined." And a costume contest if you wanted to get dressed up.

Jon mentally reviewed what he'd needed to tell them, then nodded and headed through the portal. Possibly with a muttered, Call me boring.

comments

Blank and waiting for paint! Because this was a goddamn arts and crafts class, okay? The teachers got that part right!

"So, we did your characters last week. Today we're doing dice," Jane said. "Which are apparently something people collect, so this will be a personalized set for you."

"Apparently there's a risk you'll turn into some kind of goblin." That wasn't what that meant, Cara. "Try to avoid getting into fights with the gremlins if you do."

"...oh, I hadn't thought of that." Jane was now going to be paranoid about this.

It didn't help that Cara was from somewhere something like that might actually happen. "That's why I'm here, to bring up potential problems."

She was a giver like that!

"How about we get painting?"

And not turning into literal (as opposed to figurative) dice goblins!

comments

The Memory of Living - Thursday, Period 1. [6/4]

Posted by: talentforlying

Class today met in an empty Danger Shop. Not even anywhere to sit -- Constantine was going to be keeping people on their toes.

"Let's talk about our second favorite part of grief - anger," John said with annoying cheer once everyone had assembled. "Because once we stop trying to rewrite reality, it's easier to be angry with everyone and everything than let yourself feel anything else."

"We've all thought it - why me? Why them? I want revenge, someone needs to pay, fuck God, fuck the universe, it's my fault, it's their fault... you know the chorus, because you've probably sung it at least once. Some people get short-tempered and unstable, lashing out, while others go ice cold. Some get verbally snappy while others turn that rage inward."

"It's the destructive cycle of thoughts and outcomes: thoughts lead to feelings, feelings lead to behaviors, and behaviors circle back to our thoughts."

"So, how do you yank yourself out of that, to get going towards something 'healthier?'" Yes, he did the air quotes. "The pros talk a big game about recognizing the underlying feelings, not lying to yourself about it. Doing shite like meditation and yoga. Art. Poetry. Journaling. Stuff where you don't have to talk, you just do. Hell, they suggest thinking about it from someone else's point of view, but that seems fucked-up to me - then you're just feeling shit for two people, not just yourself."

"The thing about anger, is that it can be calming, in a fucked-up kind of way. That rage can burn everything else away, and let you feel like you're thinking clearly." John shrugged, his hands in his pockets. "You aren't, but it can feel like it."

"Spill. When you feel the anger rising, do you try to break the cycle? How? Does it actually work, or are you just going through the motions to feel better about yourself?"

comments

Maybe it was. Anyway, she was here now and the library itself seemed to be rather festive. Not because Belle was there but because it was June.

There were rainbow signs and books arranged in rainbow piles. There was plenty of informational non-fiction to be found and the romance section was nearly bursting at the seams.

The Fandom Library was ready for Pride. Or at least it was getting there. It could always do more.

comments

Ever.

“Today’s movie is about a boat! Boats seemed like a summery thing. Good for vacations.”

Stark had not seen the movie yet, no.

“This one has a cruise ship and a smaller boat and the two meet and…” he frowned. “Monsters? That’s fine. It might still be fun! And I have boat themed snacks for today! But not monster ones. I’m not sure what I’d do for monster snacks, actually. But for boats there are Life Savers that are hard and gummy ones. And there are goldfish crackers. And popcorn, of course, because there should always be popcorn. And salted caramels because sea water is salty.” It made sense to him. “And popcorn and sodas of course.”

Of course.

“Enjoy the movie?”

comments

Song of Dominia, Thursday, Period 3

Posted by: deathsmajesty

"So, I know I brought up the Planeswalker War last week, but I've decided that it's entirely too stupid to talk about," Liliana announced from where she was lounging behind her desk. "Honestly, it will just be a bunch of names - even moreso than usual - fighting over even stupider things than usual. One group of people wanted power, another group of people didn't like each other, a third group was trying to play peacemaker <s>of course they were white and green mages, this was back before Magic's color wheel had anything even approaching depth</s>, and in the end, Leshrac - mustache-twirling villain, even sans mustache - ended up ringing the Grey Chime. The Grey Chime was something of the poor man's Apocalypse Chime--" which had also gotten rung and yes, by a Planeswalker, but hey! Not on Dominaria! "--and destroyed most of Corondor, annihilating three major cities, Shikar, Telemar, and Hamath, and staining the sky above the continent eerie colors."

( Sure, it had involved magical beacon that had lured a bunch of Planeswalkers into one place and wouldn't let them leave, but when would THAT ever become relevant again? )

"That rift was called the Yavimayan Rift, as it had been located in Yavimaya, a great forest on what remains of Terisiare, after the Blast turned an entire continent into an archipelago. And, somewhat surprisingly, it was not the first rift to be formed. That honor belongs to the Madaran Rift." Liliana pulled out a large map of Dominaria, pointing to a small island off the western coast of Jamuraa, the southernmost continent. "Stop me if you heard this one," she continued wryly, "But Madara also used to be a continent. It was, in fact, where Nicol Bolas had his empire, back during Mythohistory. Unlike Ugin," and some other Planeswalkers who won't be named, "Bolas didn't just leave Dominaria once his spark ignited and never returned. He had power and dominion here, especially after unlocking powers that dwarfed even those of the other Elder dragons." Did Liliana sound wistful there? Nah, surely not. "Madara was the scene of the very first duel between Planeswalkers, some fifteen thousand years ago. Nicol Bolas and an unnamed demonic leviathan fought to the death. The stories that remain of that battle are sketchy at best, save that it took days, the seas went mad, storms rent the skies, and a third of Madara was utterly destroyed. Whatever spell took out a third of a continents also tore open reality and created the first rift."

Planeswalkers and wrecking reality, the peanut butter and jelly of Magic history.

comments

Sam Eagle Presents: Weird Or Not Weird?, Tuesday Period 3

Posted by: but_mostly_america

“I was unavoidably detained last week! I apologize. I was forced into a mandatory ‘team-building exercise’ with my coworkers elsewhere. It will not happen again!”

Mostly because Sam had instituted some anti-Muppet security measures that he hoped would save him from further Muppet activities. Sam might have forgotten about Wednesdays though. Oh well. He'd remember eventually.

“Now! My required team building activity involved a boat. We had to go on a boat. For a party!” Oh, the horror.

“Boat parties, of course, are quite weird! As are all ‘team-building activities.’” Did you know felt eagles could do airquotes with their wings? You did now!

“Some parties, of course, are not weird. Some are perfectly lovely occasions. You will not find those parties on this island. Here things are weird as we discussed in the first class!” In case you forgot that this was an odd place when you had a teacher literally made of felt talking to you right now.

“A non-weird party might have food and drink and respectable music that could be danced to appropriately. A party here would have…glitter.” Sam shuddered at the thought. “And inappropriate music! Wild dancing! Things would be loud! And unpleasant! Unless, of course, the party is one hosted by one Captain America who can, naturally, never be weird as he is all that is right and good.”

“Now! Let us discuss parties! What, to you, would make a good and not weird party?”

comments

Coping with the Non-Modern World, Tuesday, Second Period

Details, "so let's start with it: vaccines. Get them. A vaccine is when they poke you with a needle and then you don't die of--pick a plague, any plague, doesn't matter what plague you pick, they've probably got a vaccine for it. So pop on down to the clinic, tell them what world you're from, and let them come up with a schedule to catch you up on all the not-dying needles you need for that world and this one, hmm?" The clinic seemed to have...changed...somewhat since she had left the island, but surely they still offered vaccines. "Then when you go home you can be incredibly healthy and the envy of all your friends. No, I don't know how to get your friends vaccinated." Honestly, who worried about their friends dying of influenza? Not Yennefer, that was for sure, but then she wasn't sure Jaskier was aging anyway.

No, she hadn't just admitted Jaskier was her friend. Why did you think that?

"To answer your next question, no, I haven't the foggiest idea how the vaccines work. They seem to be science, whereas I could tell you all about it if they were magic. But they do work, so: get some. Are there any questions? I do hope not."

comments

Never mind. Anyway, I apologize. This week we're starting in Paris." He handed them each a ticket for a tour. "It'll be a few hours, but...well, we've got portals, so. There were hundreds of them, perhaps more, and by this time, many of them had taken mates and started breeding children of their own. Dragons eat a great deal, do not share easily or well, especially with one another, and are incredibly aware of their own status and standing in their internal hierarchy."

( Not unlike Planeswalkers in that way... )

"Nicol Bolas is the only surviving Elder dragon of Dominaria now. He brags that he killed his brother Ugin in an extended battle on a different plane. In 2824 AR, Arcades Sabboth was summoned by a Planeswalker, Leshrac, to serve as his champion in a duel against another Planeswalker, Kristina of the Wood. Some of you may remember her name as one of the Nine Titans who accompanied Urza to Phyrexia. She was one of the two people killed by Tevash Szat." You know, the pretext Urza needed to kill Szat and power the soul bombs, right before he decided to become friends with Yawgmoth instead. "Tevash Szat also killed Chromium Rhuell, the shapeshifting dragon who stayed out of the Elder Dragon War completely, in 2934 AR, as part of a plot for Szat and Leshrac to escape the Shard of the Twelve Worlds." Which, if you remembered, was also Urza's fault. "Rhuell's death was the spark to the kindling that eventually ignited the Planeswalker War, which is definitely going to have to wait for another day - and possibly several drinks - as that was an absolute nightmare of ridiculousness."

It was possible that Planeswalkers didn't deserve nice things.

comments

But generally speaking, it is when is a loss doesn't feel real yet. You know that the loss happened but it doesn't feel like it, or you feel like you can still somehow change the situation." Yes, that came out slightly sarcastic.

"Grief can be a messy process and everyone reacts to it differently. People struggle to consciously or unconsciously acknowledge the loss."

"The denial stage of grief is characterized by the following experiences: Feeling shocked or emotionally numb, being confused and disoriented, shutting down and being unable to process emotions, forgetting about the loss or disbelief that the loss occurred, avoiding reminders of the loss, sleeping more than usual, procrastinating in dealing with the loss and its consequences, staying busy all the time to avoid thinking about the loss or engaging in mindless behaviors and being easily distracted, focusing on the needs of others instead of our own needs, thinking or saying, 'I’m fine,' or 'Everything’s fine,'" Was that a pointed look at the class?

Yes. Yes it was.

"And, of course, using substances like alcohol or drugs to avoid facing reality. My personal fucking favorite method of coping!"

"Of course, grief is a fucking bitch, and even when you think you're over it, it'll come swinging at you out of left-field. You might get the urge to contact the person who's gone - whether dead or just out of your life - before you realize they're gone, and then BAM! You're caught in the cycle again. You might think of a joke the person would enjoy, then realize you won't get to share it with them. Or you'll have the feeling that the person was just with us, or that they never left."

comments

Somehow, both the pastry and book tables were even more full than last week.

"Welcome back," Isabela declared cheerfully. "You've done the good stuff with some reading, now it's time to get to the even better stuff with some gossip."

Aphra sipped the drink that this early she was still going to claim was non-alcoholic. "Share with the class something about a book that you've totally read during the last week and pick each other's brains about it. Hey, maybe some of you have even read the same book!"

That was actually how book clubs...never mind.

comments

I'm particularly fond of French food, and it is at the root of much modern gourmet cooking."

He waved them through the portal. "We're headed to Daniel et Denise, a traditional restaurant with a very good reputation." And another Michelin star. "They have a limited menu, but all of it is excellent." And thank god you both ate meat.

He led them to a casual but neat restaurant, greeting the servers in French as he headed for their table. "If you like, we can get one of each thing, and simply take any leftovers home. Because they for sure got the supplies for this from some less than reputable sources.

"Hi, good to see you all," Jane said once everyone was there. "Welcome to Arts and Crafts. And Dungeons. And Dragons. That's a lot to say in one go."

"Apparently the rolling weird dice hobby also involves making a lot of accessories." That was one way to describe it, Cara.

"So, for introductions, you're going to come and grab a random figure to paint and introduce to the class next week. We're giving you the time because there's a lot of details apparently?" Look, she wasn't an expert here. It wasn't astrophysics.

Also, half the mini-figs weren't even from D&D. So, good luck with that. John had NOT signed-up to teach this. Hells, he hadn't signed-up to teach at all this semester.

But then he'd found the course paperwork mysteriously on his desk, and, well, fuck his life.

This had either Zee or Dee's fingerprints all over it, and he wasn't sure which one would be worse.

(Didi. Didi would be worse, for reasons he didn't like to look too closely at.)

"Right. Wake up, you lot, I know it's summer and it's early but if I have to be here, so do you," he said, sitting on his desk. "M' Constantine, the librarian, for those of you that don't know me. Welcome to 'The Memory of Living,' which is pretentious as fuck, but I didn't choose it. We'll be looking at the Kübler-Ross model of grief, often referred to as the 'five stages.'"

"Swiss-American psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross originally developed stages to describe the process patients with terminal illness go through as they come to terms with their own deaths; it was later applied to grieving friends and family as well, tho that was never her original intent. She noted, 'Most of my patients have exhibited two or three stages simultaneously, and these do not always occur in the same order.'"

"You've probably heard these parroted by people around you at some point, or on the telly." John walked over to the board, picking up the chalk and starting to write.

Denial
Anger
Bargaining
Depression
Acceptance

"We'll cover one a week, leaving room for whatever nonsense the island wants to throw at us this summer," he said dryly, putting down the chalk and turning around to face the room.

"So, let's get this wake started, yeah? Name, and why you're here. Go."

comments

He’d watched movies and he’d eaten plenty of snacks before so this should go well enough. He still looked a bit nervous inside the Danger Shop that had been programmed to look like a tiny home theatre but that was just how his face often looked.

“Welcome to Movies and Snacks,” he said once it appeared that everyone was there. “Where we’ll watch movies and eat snacks because that’s a good summer activity if you don’t want to be outside in the heat. It’s also good in the winter if you don’t want to be out in the cold.” That was more his style but this was good too.

“Traditional movie snacks are often popcorn and candy but they don’t have to be. And you can add all sorts of things to popcorn. Butter, of course, but also candy or chocolate or caramel or cheese or spices or sometimes yeast…So for today I have some freshly popped popcorn and a number of <s>moddable</s> toppings and add-ins for you to make something to your taste.” Stark would be adding some Old Bay to his popcorn because of the Maryland of it all.

“And for our first movie I thought something of a classic. At least I believe it is? The first Space Battles movie.” Everyone loved those, right?

“First though…introductions? Always a good way to start things. I’m Stark. Not from Earth. Never saw a movie myself before I got to this island. Never ate popcorn either or chocolate and chocolate is perhaps my favorite thing. I’m not sure I have a favorite movie though. I don’t usually watch them on my own…”

comments
