Anakin and Ahsoka welcomed their class to a simulated version of a grimy spaceport. "Welcome."

"We can't teach you everything there is to know about ethics in one semester," Ahsoka said. "But hopefully we've given you a good start."

"Or, for those who have taken this a few times, more to think about," Anakin added. "Ahsoka, explain why we're here."

"While we've largely focused on helping you develop your own ethical framework, one aspect we haven't touched on as much is that having a solid grasp of ethics yourself will help you identify those with let's go with more flexible principles." In other words it helped you look out for people who were suss af.

"So, catch a ride with a stranger," Anakin said. "Make sure they're trustworthy!"

And not, say, Darth Maul.

There are grand ethical choices to be made that change the course of history," Anakin said, "and there are the temptations to lie when you don't feel like going somewhere."

"After all, it's not like they can prove you didn't have itchy minerals," Ahsoka added.

"But there are some who feel they must be absolutely honest in all interactions," Anakin said.

"Still others might consider such a stance...ill advised."

"Which camp do you fall into, and how truthful would you like to be, even if being honest sent you to a family holiday you'll hate?"

"This is an ethics class," Anakin said, "and there are new technologies on this planet that take some serious thought before you use them."

"Not least because they pose a serious insult to a number of old friends of ours who are actual artificial intelligences," Asohka added.

"Threepio would never behave like this," Anakin agreed. "From not knowing the number of r's in strawberry to making up legal precedents to win an argument, this current version of artificial intelligence is a solution to a problem no one really had. However, no one actually wants to write cover letters. So argue both sides for us: how could you ethically use artificial intelligence? Is it even possible?"

"We've recently returned from vacation and so sometimes the moral thing to do is not push ourselves too hard," Anakin announced piously.

"Also the Danger Shop refuses to load any other simulation," Ahsoka said from behind a pile of pillows. Because the Danger Shop was in fact full of them.

"And the Danger Shop refuses to load any other simulation," Anakin admitted begrudgingly.

"So we're going to listen to what the Force is telling us, make ourselves comfortable, and have a movie day," Ahsoka said.

"There might be a quiz, so pay attention," Anakin added.

Ahsoka nodded. "After all, it might get awkward if you can't tell us what happened."

Anakin arrived in class looking a little hunted--a day devoted to singing when one's wife was not, say, musically gifted, was a bit of a trial before enough coffee was ingested. (And Rory's song about coffee had long and included inexplicable choreography.) "Hello," he said, choosing his words carefully.

Ahoksa had mostly been dealing with melancholy introspective pieces so far. "Sometimes, if you're unsure of a course of action, it pays to look outside of yourself."

"Today in particular let's you hear what mood you are sending into the universe," Anakin agreed.

"For example, if your actions are resulting in an ominous leitmotif." Some kind of military march with kettle-bells, maybe. "Then possibly it's not such a great idea."

Some people were just iconic, okay?

"And if you combine singing with some manner of horrifying romantic overture," Anakin added, "try to keep the object of you affection in mind. They might not be prepared for a huge declaration in, say, the middle of the road today."

"A huge, awkward declaration." Because when all was said and done, they were both space monks.

"So our ethical question is, should you bear witness to someone singing, should you record it or pretend like it didn't happen? Does it depend on the song?" Anakin asked.

"Do you respect their privacy and dignity?" There was a noticeably aghast silence from the bush that had totally always been in the corner of the room at the very idea. "Does your answer change if you like the person? If you don't like them?"

"In several religions on this planet, there is a common theme regarding Impulses to avoid giving into," Anakin began. "They are called the seven deadly sins."

"They range from things that seem quite reasonable to want to try and avoid," Ahsoka added. "To others that are arguably character flaws at worst."

"Gluttony isn't that bad, or sloth," Anakin agreed. "At least compared with wrath."

"Lust isn't particularly terrible either," Ahsoka said thoughtfully. "Provided proper consent is involved."

"The less I think about and the word lust, the happier I am," Anakin admitted.

"Today we're going to talk about your favourite sin, for whatever value of favourite you find most intriguing."

"Good morning, everyone," Anakin said. "Today we're going to talk about what to do when an organization you belong to turns out to be disappointing and morally corrupt."

The Jedi, the Senate, the Republic, Anakin himself...

"And what not to do." Like not becoming a Sith.

These things happen!

Anakin nodded. "Because in the moment, it's hard to remember your training."

"Which might be why it's a good idea to spend all that time meditating." So you didn't accidentally a fascism.

Again, something something peer pressure!

"We'll be starting with meditation," Anakin agreed. "And then we'll get to the horrors."

Ahsoka had somehow never been peer pressured into committing the horrors. "Yes, the horrors."

Because Anakin had been a good teacher?

Anakin had been an excellent teacher. Which made it all the more baffling.

"Everyone on the floor," Anakin said, matching words to action and settling easily onto the ground. "Eyes closed, focusing on your breathing."

"Just let your mind empty of thoughts," Ahsoka added.

"There is no ignorance, there is knowledge," Anakin said. "The second portion of the Jedi code."

"Which is not saying a Jedi knows everything, despite the value and mystique in having that kind of reputation," Ahsoka said. "But an acknowledgement of the idea that you should always be learning, of turning ignorance to knowledge."

Anakin nodded. "You never know everything," he said. "Especially in your twenties."

"Except when you're a teenager, because then you know everything." Some things were universal, even among the Jedi. "But the first step to true knowledge and wisdom is knowing that you don't know how much you don't know."

"And learning to accept that," Anakin added. "You may have pockets of expertise -- I'm pretty good with a lightsaber and with anything I can convince to fly, but terrible at bantha care."

"Whereas I have a certain knack for community organising," and euphemisms. "But some of my other social skills can be rusty."

"Some," Anakin said dryly.

Did Anakin want to get I to the whys of that choice?

"Some," Ahsoka repeated.

He did not. "Some is good," he backtracked. "Where are areas in which you excel, and how could they become blindspots?"

Today we're going to start with the tenets of the Jedi Order," Anakin said. "The viewpoint of the galaxy we operate from."

"Like any set of ethical principles, they present a kind of simplified ideal, in practice there is of course nuance and interpretation," Ahsoka said.

"Exactly," Anakin agreed. "Just because the Jedi Code says something doesn't exist, it doesn't erase it from the galaxy . It means we as Jedi must diminish it's impact in our lives."

"Diminish isn't the word I'd use," Ahsoka replied. "But it does require making choices about what to prioritise." Or who. Anakin.

"What would you use instead?" asked Anakin Skywalker, dumbass.

"Prioritise," Ahsoka repeated, slowly.

"Right," Anakin said. "I knew that!"

Clearly not.

"The first verse is 'There is no emotion, there is peace.' Explain what that means, Ahsoka."

"Well, to make things clear, Jedi don't pretend we have no feelings," she said. "We experience the entire range of emotions like any other sapient, some quite deeply, and there's no shame in that, but we cannot allow ourselves to be ruled by them, to let them override our judgement." Like say, taking an apprentice who was nearly Force null because she was the absolute opposite to your own, overpowered master, not that Ahsoka making some assumptions about future her or anything. "We work to understand why we're feeling how we do, then let go of those feelings, so that our minds are clear when we act."

Anakin nodded. "So let's discuss what sort of techniques you would employ to let go of strong feelings and seek clarity for decision making."

"When in doubt, meditate." It was both a hint and fairly practical Jedi life advice.

The Danger Shop was set up to resemble a large, sun-filled room with a number of comfortable looking meditation cushions set up in a rough semi-circle facing the front.On the whole the vibes were very calm and welcoming. Anakin had not picked this simulation.

Anakin, in fact, looked much less relaxed than the room should make him. "Welcome to the Jedi Temple," he said. "Apparently.'

Ahsoka surely didn't know any reason it could have made him off kilter. At all. "Also welcome to this semester's Ethics class," she said. "Given the influence of the Jedi in developing both Master Skywalker's and my own sense of ethics, it seemed a good place to start with for introductions."

"Ohh," Anakin said quietly. "Oh no."

He started to look at the door. "Is he coming?"

"You're going to have to be more specific," Ahsoka replied, because there were honestly so many people Anakin could be referring to, before addressing the class again. "But for now I'd like to tell you all about how Anakin and I met."

There was one "him" that loomed particularly large in Anakin's mind, but he wasn't going to manifest a holographic version of Obi-Wan by naming him. "You were very short then," he said instead.

Ahsoka had been tempted for the visual. "I was fourteen," she said, holding her hand about the height of where the tips of her montrals would've been. "I'd just been assigned as the Padawan learner of the infamous Hero Without Fear, who promptly hid behind his own master."

"In my defense, I was an idiot," Anakin said.

"And not all that much older than I was, when all's said and done," Ahsoka added. "But in the end, I don't think I would have made it with any other master . The point of this is that at some point you will fail, and what's important is what you do and what you afterwards."

Anakin nodded. "I got better," he said. "Mostly."

Mostly. Meanwhile Ahsoka was perfect and had no concerns or worries whatsoever about training her own Padawan.

Of course not! "Today's lesson is to make a good impression," Anakin said, nodding. "Introduce yourself in a way that won't make you cringe to think back on."

One last class, one last ethical decision!

Okay, at least, one last painstakingly contrived ethical decision. Your lives were likely going to be filled with them. Which was why Liliana suggested getting rid of as many as possible before that happened. It made things ever so much easier.

Today's breakfast was a variety of sweet and savory breakfast rolls, along with the usual collection of coffees, teas, and fruit juices.

"This, I will admit, I found preprogrammed in the Danger Shop, though I've changed a few of the details," Liliana said, once people were settled in with however much breakfast they desired. "You are a captain of a small spaceship; while it does have both offensive and defensive capabilities, its primary function is that of exploration. One day, you pick up an emergency distress broadcast by the captain of another ship, a ship transporting several civilian families emigrating to a new colony. They think their ship was hit by space debris, damaging many critical functions - including shields and engines - and their hull has been breached. Life support is failing and if they are not rescued soon, they will not survive.

"However, when mapping out where this ship is located, you realize that they have drifted into a dangerous and lawless part of space, where renegade ships of thieves and slavers are known to prey on any ship they think they can outfly or outfight. This could be a legitimate call for help, this could be a ruse from a group waiting to attack your ship, it could even be both: legitimate people in legitimate danger who are being used as unwitting bait. You seem to be the only ship close enough to pick up the distress signal, which means there are no other ships close by to come to their rescue, never mind yours.

"Your crew is asking for your decision; the longer you dither, the higher the likelihood that the ship will run out of life support and that someone unfriendly and opportunistic will find them. Their life expectancy does not increase by much, should that be the case. But for you to go to them, you are risking your lives and the lives of your entire crew, the majority of whom are not trained to fight. For you to ignore them, you are sentencing dozens of people - of families - to death. You have not hailed the other ship yet; you can simply pretend you never heard it and continue on your way. From what you can tell, opinion amongst the crew is pretty evenly split between going to save them and flying away, so asking for a vote won't help. The decision comes down to you, Captain. What is your order: do you attempt to rescue the civilians? Or do you leave the Kobayashi Maru to its fate?"

Once again, breakfast was laid out amongst tables and people were free to find their own seats and make themselves comfortable for what would be another casual, relaxing day in Ethics class.

"So," Liliana asked, as she did every week. "What will you do? What is the most ethical way forward? Do you lend your assistance to create a weapon that can and will make death even easier, even faster, even cheaper? Or do you refuse, and prolong their suffering under corruption and tyranny?"

[This post describes abuses of people at the hands of a privileged elite, as well as guns and the potential repercussions of introducing them to your standard, pre-industrial fantasy population. The post does mention the possibility of giving guns to children, but not in any way that evokes modern gun violence (especially in schools), but to highlight the drawbacks of both sides of the ethical decision. The underlying premise of this post taken from Vox Machina S03E07, showing Anna Ripley's tragic backstory and her subsequent offer to Percy is what gave me the idea for Liliana teaching this class in the first place.]

After one week in the Danger Shop and one off for a trip abroad, class was once again being held in the conversatory in the creepy mansion in the woods. In addition to the regular selection of beverages, there was a selection of various delicious handpies, each platter accompanied by a discreet list of ingredients, so nobody would have to worry about allergens or dietary restrictions.

"Good morning--" a stretch, considering how early it was and how much Liliana could still be sleeping, "--and welcome back to class." Anyone who expected Liliana to apologize for canceling class while she flitted off to Argentina to get engaged was in for a very long wait. "Today, we're discussing another short story, this one called The Cold Equations by Tom Godwin. It is, in fact, very short, and I highly recommend that people read it, either before the discussion, or on your own time; I've enough copies to pass out. ( But, as a summary )

Liliana looked around the class, violet eyes dark and fathomless. "So here is your cold equation, darlings. You are the pilot. You have medicine for 6 dying men. You are the only ship in the area, there is no chance of a last minute rescue. There is a girl standing in front of you, telling you that she's very sorry, that she just wanted to see her brother, and your ship's computer is informing you that you will reach the point of no return in just a few minutes. What do you do?"

Liliana had reached out and informed the class that they would be meeting in the Danger Shop today several days before the island had decided to be cute. So, the giant steamer trunk that simply said THE MENDING (in all the alphabets that she could read, including Braille for maximum rudeness!) that had nearly blocked her in the room this morning hadn't only inconvenienced her--as well as proving her her previous decision both right and prescient. Had she thought that being in the Danger Shop would stop the luggage from appearing, however....well, that she was sad to discover was not to be.

"But, what is easy to decide in a solarium, surrounded by your peers and focusing only on a single child's misery, may become much harder when you are face to face with the people who will actually pay the price for your actions." She waved around the park, then pointed to various buildings. A hospital. A university. A day care. A market. "Welcome to Omelas, darlings. Today's ethical decision: decide whether or not you will be the personal architect of the city's downfall. Best of luck."

Considering everybody knew where to meet and how to get there, Liliana didn't offer the several minute's grace she had last week, starting her lecture at nine am exactly. People were welcome to continue to help themselves to breakfast, of course - there were mini-omelettes in bacon cups, vegetarian mini-omelettes, mini quiche bites, hashbrown bites, and a variety of breakfast crostinis available for the hungry, courtesy of Ignis, as Liliana certainly didn't cook - but she was going to continue lecturing while they did.

"So, today, we have our first ethical dilemma," Liliana said. "It's taken from the short story Those Who Walk Away From Omelas. This story opens upon Omelas, a wonderful society where there is no hunger, no violence, no kings, no gods, no masters. They are not a simple people, they have advanced technologies, they've cured common diseases, they have art and literature and science, and are sophisticated as any of us. But, more than anything else, they are happy. Comfortable. All children are loved and wanted, all consenting relationships are celebrated, every person is cherished, living not a life of pointless luxury, but joyful abundance. Scarcity does not exist here.

The end of her lecture, she sat back and looked at the class. "So, today's ethical dilemma is a simple question: go or stay? Do you stay and participate in mindful happiness, or are you one of the ones who walks away? Answer that and prepare to defend your choice--but. Remember my rules. You are answering for this exact scenario only. You cannot stay and work to free the child, or tear the city down brick by brick. if you leave, you do not get to return with an army, or declare you're going to one of the surrounding towns. "Go forth, alone and into darkness, or stay and participate in society. Those are your only two options."

Rather than teaching in a classroom this session, everyone in class had been instructed to make their way to the ~~creepy mansion in the woods~~ Professor Vess's home, and to follow the path around the house to the back, where a long glass room ran almost the full length of the house. This was where their class would be held from now on; at least until specified otherwise. It was not difficult to find their professor, she was in a wide open area with a number of different seating options arranged in a circle: a couch, several loveseats, a scattering of arm chairs (probably? none of them were murderous?), cushions and blankets, even a few hanging chairs, and a papasan or two. Look, there were sixteen of you, everybody should be able to find somewhere comfortable to sit. There were trays and tray tables, so people could help themselves to the breakfast charcuterie boards, courtesy of Professor Scientia, that were sitting on a low table in the middle of the circle, along with a selection of juices, teas, and (of course) coffee.

We're having a practical exam today," Anakin said from the front of the class where he was keeping a wary eye on a clearly irritated Alot of Holiday Annoyances, which was covered in twinkly lights and emanating the distinct hum of Mariah Carey's "I don't want Alot for Christmas" (which was, frankly, hurtful to the Alot's feelings).

"It's all very good to consider the ethics of violence in the abstract," Ahsoka spoke with the serenity of one who did not celebrate the local holidays and more importantly was able to opt out of dealing with them. "But sometimes you have to deal in the concrete. The concrete and angry."

No, the Alot of Holiday Annoyances did not want to play Whamageddon, it had a noise sensitivity.

"This, as you might've guessed, is Alot of Holiday Annoyances, and they only get more powerful and irritated as the season progresses. How should we deescalate?"

"After all there are many kinds of negotiations," Ahsoka said with a beatific smile.

"Do not kill the Alot," Anakin added.

Could holiday annoyances ever really die?

Anakin's hair was decidedly less lustrous than normal.

"So we've had my least favorite day of December," he grumbled.

Ahsoka, on the other hand, looked downright radiant. If asked, she'd put it down to not having hair. It wasn't technically lying.

Anakin's mood soured even further looking at how happy and unaffected she was. It was very healthy!

"Today we talk about the ethics of taking your mood out on others and how sometimes they deserve it."

Anakin, no.

"Or about how when a person has a device tuned to them, they're not obligated to share."

Ahsoka, no.

"This isn't about your shower." It was 80 percent about her shower.

Press xesh to doubt, kids. "I didn't mention my shower."

She didn't have to.

"We can also discuss the ethics of basic courtesy," Anakin added.

"It is very discourteous to try and steal someone's sonic cleanser, yes."

This could go on for a while.

"There are a lot of ethical minefields to work around when it comes to holiday celebrations," Anakin began. "Familial obligations to see people you might not want to spend time with normally, traditional foods that everyone doesn't love, finding gifts for someone who hates everything--it can be exhausting."

"And that's the best case scenario," Ahsoka added. "It's rarely the best case scenario."

Anakin snickered. "So today we will practice the art of not rising to the bait." Anakin was especially terrible at this.

Case in point. "Like not discussing why some humans seem to be unable to manage their pelts."

"Do you mean Obi-Wan's beard?" Anakin asked.

"I mean some people's beards." Skywalkers as a class did not do facial hair well.

"Because his beard was good," Anakin said, already missing the point of this discussion.

"I never said his beard wasn't." In case anyone had any doubts.

"We'll give you some scenarios--" one would definitely be about commenting on a relative's terrible goatee, "--and see how you do."

When the class arrived, they'd find their teachers in the front of the classroom again, one looking slightly more pleased with himself than the other.

He was also chewing.

"We did have a class planned on the ethics of hospitality and social customs around food, but it turns out one of us had different ideas."

Which one of them could she mean?

It was truly a mystery for the ages. "I missed breakfast," Anakin protested.

"That's what ration bars are for," Ahsoka pointed out, completely reasonably. "Not the demonstration cookie." The last one at that.

"But cookies are tastier than ration bars," Anakin replied with an unrepentant shrug. "We can adjust the class."

Ahsoka was giving him such a judgemental look right now. "Yes. We can. How do you handle betrayal ethically?"

"It was a cookie," Anakin said, "Betrayal feels like a strong word for this."

"The last cookie." Ahsoka had the moral high ground.

How dare you make him experience a consequence for his choices, Ahsoka. "Very well," Anakin said. "Let's discuss how we don't overreact to other people's actions."

Sure, Anakin.

"Well, some of us have firsthand knowledge there."

Anakin.

Anakin had never overreacted to anything-- yeah, even the narrative couldn't pretend that was true.

"So let's discuss how we react to small disappointments," Anakin said. "Confront the person? Ignore it? Start a passive-aggressive internal list of all the ways this person has wronged you and eventually explode about it?"

Anakin.

"The most important part about decision-making," Anakin began from his spot in the Danger Shop that had been, strangely, set up like a sumo wrestling arena, "is to make you choices from a place of mental clarity. Decisions we make rashly--when we are upset, angry, or afraid--tend to be bad ones."

Not that anyone here knew anything about that. Anakin.

"However, sometimes the fastest way to attain such clarity of mind is through physical exertion." That was Ahsoka's justification for this class, and she was sticking to it.

Anakin nodded. "And since we're not giving you lightsabers, the Jedi's preferred version of stress relief, I went through the summer team building supplies and found these bumper balls for you to wear and get some aggression out in a safe way."

When the Ethics students came into class today, they'd find their teachers looking a little confused while surrounded by an extensive pillow fort.

"The structure stubbornly refuses to move," Anakin admitted. "We've tried to lift it three times."

"We've found an educational movie about ethical decision making," Anakin said, nodding, "and we can watch and discuss it."

"There are a number of lessons to be learnt from this film." First and foremost, make sure Aphra hadn't been anywhere near the projector recently.

Anakin frowned as the movie began. "Was this the movie we picked?"

Ahsoka tilted her head thoughtfully. "I don't think so."

"Maybe we'll all learn something, then," Anakin said. They'd all learn about sexy thieves!

And really, wasn't that the most important thing to learn about?
