Class was being held on the beach again this week, because neither Aphra nor Isabela were any good at following rules even when they weren't extremely stupid. So beach crime it was.

Judging by the face they were attempt to set a massive pile of driftwood alight using last week's pamphlet as kindling, it was firey beach crime. Which would surely end well. Especially with the cooler of drinks and the stack of pointy sticks next to another cooler of various toastable snacks.

"Beach crime," Aphra shouted triumphantly as the flames took.

"Beach crime party," Isabela added, gesturing to the various coolers. "Invite all your friends."

Class was back on the actual beach again, where Isabela was looking particularly cheerful.

"The thing about the beach is that you can do almost anything there," she started, only for a hillock of sand to appear and some kind of...was it a ground hog? Or maybe a wombat? Some kind of large burrowing animal to emerge and hand her a sealed pamphlet before vanishing back under the earth.

Aphra leaned over to read the title of the pamphlet. "'Things you cannot not do while having fun on Fandom's beaches'," she read. "According to who?"

Isabela shrugged and broke the seal, the pamphlet immediately unfolding into many more pages than should even have fitted in there in the first place. After several long minutes of perusing the list and exchanging pointed commentary with each other, they finally paid attention tot he class again.

"Apparently the only thing you can do to have fun at the beach is to stand ten foot away and look respectfully at it from a distance," Isabela said finally.

Aphra pointed to a spot on one of the pages. "After you've gotten the beach's informed consent, in writing to look at it."

Isabela nodded very seriously, then shoved the pamphlet down the front of her shirt. "Good thing pirates aren't overly fond of rules. So just have fun on the beach your way."

Class was back in the danger shop, with a movie projector set up again, however, this time, the screen was set up in front of a wavepool, and instead of beach chairs, there were floaties bobbing in the water.

"It's time for a fun beach movie!" Aphra declared.

Class was being held in the Danger Shop again. Partially because it was far too hot to go to the actual beach, and partially because Isabela was, well, partial to the neon pink sand. Which had a number of pastel coloured toy buckets set up along it.

"Welcome back," Isabela greeted them, and no, neither she nor Aphra would even acknowledge their absence last week. "Today we'll be tackling a class of the beach. Sand castles!"

"We considered making this a competition for best sandcastle to motivate you," Aphra added. "But we decided that really, you're all winners." Plus otherwise they'd have to judge the merits of everyone's castle, and that would be too much like work.

Class was in the Danger Shop rather than on the beach like last week, set up as an open air cinema on the beach. The neon pink beach, look certain teachers had really broken that setting and trying to fix it had only made it even more pink. Somehow.

"Last week we covered some of the more traditional activities you could take part in on a beach." Sure you could say that. There was no way of stopping people from saying inaccurate things. "Today we're mixing it up a bit by engaging in a bit of outdoor movie watching."

They would not be mixing up the movie, however. What did you think this was?

In a truly stunning turn of events, class was being held on the beach. A nice sandy part of Serenity Cove to be precise, where Isabela and Aphra were set up with cabana lounges and sun umbrellas.

"Beach," Isabela intoned wisely gesturing to the sand.

Aphra nodded agreement, sipping from a brightly coloured drink that had its own little umbrella. "Beach."

Oh, come on, did any of you expect anything different out of this class?

The class was on the beach today, where there were several coolers and a grill and a fold-out table, and you had a teacher who didn't have trauma today.

"Morning, everybody. Hopefully you didn't eat too big a breakfast, because today we're going to talk about beach food," Kitty greeted them. "Sometimes you'll get a beach where you can bring your own grill, sometimes they'll have them there, sometimes you can cook over a bonfire, sometimes you can just bring a cooler of your own food. Also, for the love of god, don't litter. It ends up in the water and everything gets terrible. So I want to hear what you think is good beach food, and then we're going to eat. Everyone gets a turn at the grill, too. There's vegetables if you don't eat meat, it's just a good skill to have."

Was this class mainly because Kitty was hungry? Maybe.

It was definitely a Danger Shop day today, and today it looked a lot like Hawaii, complete with a surfer boy type standing there, smiling and waving at the class when they came in.

"Today we're going to learn surfing," Kitty told them. "If you know nothing about it, you get a board, you paddle out, and then you stand up and ride the waves and don't fall down."

"There's more to it than that-" the surfer boy started.

"It's a sport that started with the ancient Polynesians, and modern surfing sprang off from that, getting really popular in places like Hawaii and California and Australia in the 50's and 60's," she went on. "I could go onto a whole thing about the history, but it's summer and I don't have my brain turned on so you're just going to listen to this nice guy over here and then try it on your own."

Today the class was notified that they'd be taking a portal, and that they should wear beach-appropriate clothes, if not necessarily bathing suits, because that might be weird to portal in. Kitty herself was in shorts and a loose t-shirt with sandals that she could take off.

"Hey, guys," she greeted them. "Today, we're taking Norman's suggestion and checking out some tide pools, because I wanted to. We could do that in the Danger Shop, oooor we could head to California for the class period and you can see it for real. If you don't know what a tide pool is, the ocean cuts little pools into the shore, which animals then live in. When the tide is low, you can really see what kind of different creatures are in there. I have a guide here if anyone wants to actually know what they're looking at. Now, when we get there, do not touch anything you find. They're living animals, and some of them have things like spines or stinging cells. Not enough to really hurt, but they're there for a reason. So unless anyone has any questions, let's go."

And then they were off, to check out a tide pool for real.

The class had gotten an email this morning telling them to meet at the beach, and to wear beach-appropriate things, and also a warning that there was sand that you didn't want in your shoes ~~since it's coarse and gets everywhere~~.

"Morning!" Kitty greeted them. "My name's Kitty Pryde-Barton, you can call me pretty much any of those names, I don't really care. In this class, if you can even call it that, we're going to do beach things. We'll be meeting out here unless the weather's bad, in which case you'll have a message telling you to go to the Danger Shop, and you can wear whatever makes you feel comfortable getting in the water, even if we're not getting in there every week. I know some of you, and not others, so why don't we start by going around and saying who you are and if there's anything you're hoping to get to in the next six weeks. Oh! And if there's something you can't do, like swimming, you should probably let me know but you can do that after class if you want. Okay, let's start here, and then we'll move on to today's activity."

Clint gave his students a wave as they showed up at the beach today, where he had surfboards, body boards, rafts, and water guns set out. "Hey guys. This is our last class together, and if you were hoping for an exam, I'm sorry to disappoint you," he said, laughing. "Instead, I figured I'd give you one last chance to work on your surfing skills, or your water fight skills, or your relaxing skills. It's been really nice to meet you, especially with our latest bit of weirdness, and I hope you keep coming out here as long as the weather allows."

When the students arrived, they'd find a bunch of rafts laid out, along with a table of fruity island-type drinks.

"So, I don't know about you guys, but after I've been kidnapped by aliens, exercise isn't my top priority," he said. "I think it's been a hell of a week for everyone, whether you were up there or down here, so we're going to pretend I said something really smart about mental fitness and not pushing yourself too hard, and you're just going to float and swim and relax today. Hopefully, no one has a problem with that?"

Today, Clint had the students meet him in the Danger Shop, where he'd made a beach that was a little warmer, sunnier, and different looking than what Fandom could offer.

"Since you guys seem to be pretty good swimmers, I thought we'd take today to try some snorkeling. I have wetsuits if anyone wants one, but the water's pretty nice, so you really just need your very attractive mask." Clint showed them how to work the mask and tube and then waved them off towards the water. "You can enjoy the sights or just swim around, whatever works for you today. Just enjoy yourselves."

Clint had sent a message to his students to wear their swimsuits today, and when everyone arrived, they'd find a variety of bodyboards, surfboards, and rafts on the sand.

"Since it's pretty hot out today, I figured it would be a good idea to spend our class time in the water," he said. "The boards are for you to use, whether you want to try surfing or just floating around. I'll be keeping an eye on you, so you're safe."

When the students arrived at the beach today, they'd find Clint in the middle of two big mounds of sand, with two buckets of water balloons at his feet.

"Hey guys. I noticed last week that we have a nice balance of guys and ladies in our group here, so I figured a little competition might be fun," Clint said, kicking at one of the buckets. "Guys vs. girls, and the driest team wins. You each have a spot to plan for a few minutes, and I'm just going to be over there staying out of the crossfire." He had learned a thing or two about what the students here were capable of, after all.

Clint had hoped that the name of the class would give everyone a hint that they'd be meeting out on the beach each week, but just in case, he'd also sent out ~~handwavey~~ messages to tell everyone where to meet. When it looked like everyone had arrived, he gave them all a wave."Hey guys. I'm assuming everyone who's here is signed up for Beach Fitness. If you're not, I don't really mind so feel free to stick around if you want to. For those of you I haven't met, I'm Clint Barton, and I'll be your teacher, although I expect this to be more fun than a whole lot of me lecturing at you like a real teacher. To start us out, I wanted to get an idea of what kind of shape everyone's in."

Clint pointed out four orange cones that had been set up in the sand, two by where they were gathered and two farther down the beach. "This is just a basic 100 meter run, but if you've never run in sand before, you might find it different than your typical run around town. I want everyone to take a turn and see how fast you can run it, and then you can hang out in the water when you're done. Once everyone's finished, we can do introductions. Hopefully you're not tired of that yet." If they were, well, traditions were important.

So Australia was playing the Netherlands at the World Cup, and Herc wasn't a huge football fan or anything, but he knew enough to decide to just not look at that. Much the way one might not look at a car wreck. It was better for everyone.

Instead, he had brought photos of coral reefs to pass around to the students as he said, "Here's a fun fact for you: coral reefs cover point one percent of the ocean's floor, yet contain a quarter of the ocean's known biodiversity. Now, I, personally, think that's really cool." It probably had something to do with the giant one that uh...hadn't done so well what with the kaijuu and all. "Coral reefs thrive despite the fact that the waters they're found in tend to be very nutrient-poor by recycling nutrients, making them a very efficient system. And that's your fun fact for the day. The rest of your class period is assigned to what this class is all about: enjoying the beach. Have fun."

Today, a net had been set up for, "Beach volleyball," Herc announced, tossing a volleyball toward the students. "For the unfamiliar, the rules are as follows: ~~handwavey speech goes here~~. Beach volleyball has a few points over regular volleyball, specifically, sand is a bit nicer to fall on than concrete or wood. Plus, it's just fun. So, team up, or don't, and play some volleyball. Don't try to get me involved, I'm too old for this."

Today on the beach, the students would find tables with various types of fish and shellfish ~~tossed on the barbie~~, mostly grilled, along with seaweed snacks and...vanilla and chocolate ice cream.

Herc began with, "As you're probably already aware, a lot of food comes from the sea. Now, there are factors to be aware of, such as overfishing--some fish may be delicious, but they're not sustainable at the rates they've been fished, and so we need to not eat them so much so their populations can hopefully recover--and pollution and how that affects the fish. Fish toward the top of the food chain in particular, such as tuna, can have very high levels of mercury, and so that's something you need to watch out for." Still a sight better than 'has it been exposed to Kaiju Blue?' as a concern, but it was still there.

"Now, you're probably wondering what the ice cream is doing here, and it's not just because we needed dessert. Some ice creams, including these, are thickened with , which is made from seaweed, and it seemed kinder than serving you seaweed-flavored ice cream. So, enjoy. Try the seaweed snacks, they're good."

"I knew I wanted today's class to be on waves," Herc began, "but frankly, I suspect you don't want to learn about the science behind waves right now any more than I want to teach it. Lot of math, it is. And this island isn't exactly well situated for surfing. You can, however, bodyboard in the surf, so I encourage you to grab a board and give it a go. If you don't feel like it, you're welcome to stick around here, there's still sandcastle gear." He ~~handwavily~~ explained how one went about bodyboarding before encouraging them to, "Have fun!"

The students should have received an e-mail or other missive requesting they meet at the beach today, since in Herc's opinion there wasn't much point in teaching a class on the beach from inside a classroom. He had, however, set up a canopy to protect them from the sun, since sunburn was not conducive to beach appreciation. Max could be found under a corner of the canopy, sacked out on a sailcloth dog bed and chewing on a toy shaped like a fish. No, Herc didn't half spoil that dog, why did you ask?

"Good morning!" Herc said to his assembled students. "Since you're here, I assume you caught on to the word 'beach' in this class's title. We're a small group, but that's all right. I'm Herc Hansen, I'll be your teacher, and that's Max. Be nice to Max, and don't feed him too many treats. He needs to watch his weight. Now, where I come from, there's been some...problems, and while the Atlantic is actually still quite nice, the Pacific, not so much, and we didn't appreciate what we had until it was all messed up. So let's appreciate! You'll actually learn some things in this class, don't get me wrong, but a big part of it will be just enjoying the beach and taking the time to experience it. Now, you're welcome to wear your swimsuits to this class, or whatever beach-appropriate clothes you want, as long as all the necessary bits are covered, yeah? If you need sunblock, I've got a couple of tubes of it to give out, so please take one if you don't have any, but I'm afraid it won't do you much good today, because you need to apply it at least fifteen minutes before you go outside for it to be completely effective. So, take it with you, and use it from here on out. To cover your entire body you'll want to use about an ounce, which is approximately enough to fill a shot glass, and if you're going to be outside for longer than this class, you'll want to reapply your sunscreen every two hours. Otherwise you're exposing yourself to UV radiation, which could lead to a sunburn in the short term and skin cancer somewhere down the road, which is even less fun.

"So, on that bright note, let's move on to introductions, since I'm afraid I don't know most of you yet. I'd like everyone to give me their name, age, and what they like best about the beach or the ocean. After that, we're going to build sandcastles. I have a variety of ~~moddable~~ buckets and whatnot to work with, and you can work together if you like. I find it's more fun when it's an interactive thing, yeah? And if you've not built a sandcastle before, I or I'm sure one of your fellow students will be happy to help you. So, introductions, starting with, eh, you," he decided, pointing to one of the students at random.

Beaching It [Week 7, Period 5, Wed. 8/18]

The day was forecast as warm and sunny and so the class met on the real beach again. John was waiting for them with tables of filled water pistols and water rifles as well as a couple buckets of filled water balloons. Yeah, it was pretty obvious what class was going to be about today, but John was fine with this as he waited, tossing his water rifle between his hands.

"So, last class is usually some sort of wrap it up, see what you've learned or whatever real teachers do. I'm not much of a teacher, but I was thinking we'd do something a little more fun and active on our final day." He charged up his water rifle and shot a stream directly at his TA. Yeah, he was kind of an ass. Before she could kick his ass, he directed the class in their activity, "Grab a gun, grab some balloons, or go chill down on a towel if you fear such things. No matter what, I'm betting some people are gonna get wet today!"

Beaching It [Week 6, Period 5, Wed. 8/11]

When the class arrived in the Danger Shop they would find their teacher prepared for them with two bare feet in the sand and sunglasses in place. Yes, he'd gotten dug out of his shallow sand grave since last week. Along with the usual beach equipment, John had also gotten the computer to cough up buckets of golf balls and golf clubs at the class' usual beachy spot.

"So, I'm betting some of you are at least over the whole movie thing since Monday, God knows I am, so we're gonna find a new way to release any residual weekend stress. And no, I don't mean talking about it, do I look like your shrink?" John thought he was too entertaining to be a shrink, but that was only because he'd been made to talk to Heightmayer once too often.

"Anyhow, this--" John lifted a golf club "--is a golf club. You hold it like so and swing it with the intent of hitting this tiny ball really far." John demonstrated, going so far as to hold up a golf ball before dropping it on the green pad at water's edge and taking a massive swing at it. Sure his form could use some work, but he was combining tanning with a makeshift driving range. Perfection was not the goal here. "Great way to relax. Quiet way, too. Of course, you can always say screw it to the golfing and go swimming or suntanning, just uh, try to stay out of range, okay? Good!"

Beaching It [Week 5, Period 5, Wed. 8/4]

It seemed getting to the beach for class over an hour before class was supposed to meet and relaxing had led to John falling asleep while he tanned. Now, he was a smart man so there was no fear of resulting sunburn, however, a certain baby bobcat TA had found him and, being a very curious, cruel, and resourceful bobcat, had buried the teacher in the sand. Turned out her paws really liked the feel of digging!

The bobcat lounged in the sun on her victim's towel, stretching to lick a paw and give an ear a rub as the class began to arrive. John eyed her cautiously through his sunglasses, having already sent a barrage of foul language her way to encourage her to dig him out already. Alas. "Well guys, I think we're gonna skip the demonstration part of how to build a sandcastle today. I did bring some buckets, shovels, and sculpting tools for interested parties, but it seems our TA thought it would be more fun to bury people in the sand. So that's what we're gonna do!"

He kind of hoped this tactic would lead to someone kind un-burying him at some point. "So, why bury a person in the sand? Well, for a good answer, ask Rose. Hell, the last time I was buried in the sand up to my neck I'd been murdered callously by my best friend and, well, in that reality he'd been a little on the border of something else, uh, but we won't go there right now! Anyhow, it's more a joke you play on nice guys who fell asleep around people he thought he could trust. Much like the old 'write foul words in sunscreen' gag. While I don't recommend the second, the first is kind of entertaining....for a while." Not a long while.

"So, grab a bucket and a hand shovel and get to digging!" John paused. "Or, you know, you could dig me out." He didn't think he was that lucky, actually.
