You can keep your things in a locker, and they've got towels and hair things and...and moisturizer." If that was your thing. "Oh, and you get a drink. Her dreams had been haunted by memories of the past, there was a constant singing in her brain that was trying to get her to do...something...and wouldn't shut up the way the Onakke did, no matter how hard she willed it, and Constantine's class today had been a walk down memory lane that she enjoyed even less than her dreams of her girlhood with Arine, under Lady Ana's watchful eye.

( Sleep deprived lecture )

She...hadn't meant to go this deep into recounting the destruction of Tolaria, as most of her students had already known about it. She was just not going to think too deeply about why she had, either. That was a level of self-reflection that she was not interested in at this time. Blame it on lack of sleep, perhaps.

comments

"But everyone always tries."

"Welcome to the Bargaining Stage! During this part, people often make deals or promises to try to reverse or alleviate their loss. They may ruminate over ‘what if’ situations and wish to go back and change the past in the hopes of preventing the loss, or in the present, people may try to make a deal with themselves, or with a higher power for those who are spiritual or religious, under the condition that if they act in a particular way, they might feel better or the situation may improve."

"With your standard civilians, this often manifests as offering to be a better person, to help others, or to make donations to charities, feeling as if they are negotiating with fate, a higher power, God, or the universe. Wishing for miracles to negate the loss, or mentally bargaining about the past and wondering if the loss wouldn’t have happened if you did certain things differently. For instance, you may think: 'If I stopped by his house that night, he would still be here,' or 'I gave up on the relationship too quickly; if only I had tried harder, we would still be married.'"

"Sometimes, those deals can be a little more...concrete. When you live on Fandom Island, well, we're the type of people to try and actually make bargains with very very real higher powers -- like me."

"I had cancer. I had cancer that was killing me rapidly, and in my grief over it, I made a devil's bargain... with three of them no less."

"I sold my soul to all three Lords of Hell, and now I cannot die, because the moment I do, they must go to war over my soul. Something that the heavens of my world will not allow. None of them want to lose power. None of them can afford to lose face. And so, I have three of the world's worst fucking guardian 'angels' waiting for me to slip up in a way that guarantees they get to collect and the others have no claim."

"I bargained with the universe, and got a new, cancer-free body out of it." Constantine shrugged. "Can't say I regret it, but I can say I don't recommend it as a course of action. Most of you have powers that will tempt you to bargain with death, rewrite time, deny the cosmos. I can't tell you not to do it, because I sure fucking did."

"But if you do... know that the deal always comes due, sooner or later. You cannot outrun it forever, yeah? The universe will have balance, one way or another."

comments

She'd been at the house of one of her old foster families, the last family before Callista, wandering about the rooms and hallways. Except the house had been much bigger than she'd remembered, and also empty of pretty much all furniture and stuff, leaving just the bare bones of a house that seemed to stretch for miles. She'd searched all around for anyone from the family, but her own voice had echoed back to her off of empty walls.

It had started to get really creepy, but then the house had kept getting bigger and bigger until it had turned into some kind of Alice in Wonderland adventure that took it from being some unsettling exploration of unending liminal spaces to something wacky and cool.

She was currently reading books about dreams and what they mean to see if there was anything deeper to it than 'maybe don't inhale half a pizza right before bed.'

comments

"Let's talk about technology. You from the future, you're just going to have to figure out how to reverse this on your own time. If you're coming from a time that's just about got the hang of the water mill, or is more reliant on magic that not everyone has, the technology of this world is a boon. Hot water from a tap, flush toilets, hair dryers, don't even get me started on the phones, that will be a whole separate lesson...and then you go home and you have none of that. How can you cope? Yes, you can learn how your favorite bits are done and become a genius inventor, and yes, that may have knock-on effects you couldn't have anticipated for the rest of your society, but who cares when you're nice and comfortable and not dealing with a chamber pot? But also, that sounds like a lot of effort." And if you were a woman a man would probably steal the credit. "So, what are you to do? Merely suffer? I should hope not. But I am interested to hear what ideas you may have, and what your favorite piece of technology available in your more advanced time is. Discuss."

comments

Honestly, Aphra didn't know why she hadn't thought of this before, it was the easiest class ever.

There was also a rickety looking projector that they'd dragged out of somewhere.

"Today we're looking at what can happen if a book gets popular enough," Aphra told the class. "An adaptation."

"The film of the book, as they say," Isabela added, in case none of them were familiar with the concept.

"And for demonstration purposes, we've got a " Aphra, that was a sequel of a remake, not an adaptation.

comments

He met them at Portalocity with a large box that contained assorted <s>moddable</s> hats and wraps, towels, and enough tubes of sunscreen for everybody to have two.

"When you're out on the water, you often end up burned despite your best efforts, so everybody please be careful and wear enough of this." He was an Englishman who grew up in a beach town. He knew the benefits of not burning!

"This weekend, a lot of places will be celebrating Pride, which is a way of acknowledging that people of different sexualities and gender identities are all worthy of being people, which is somehow still a radical idea for some." Because people were idiots.

The portal opened to someplace very sunny. "We'll be visiting Key West Pride today. Key West is the southernmost point of the continental United States. It began as a place of the rich and conversely, scavengers. Because some rich people are bad at sailing. It largely thrives on tourism these days, and declared its independence from the US when the government interfered with that in an effort to keep people from entering the country illegally. Apparently, they threw bread at the Coast Guard."

Why bread? Who knew!

"Anyway, it's a rather...er...laid-back place, I suppose you'd say." Look, when your two most famous residents were Jimmy Buffet and Ernest Hemingway, you got a reputation. Largely for booze.

"We'll be going on a boat trip. There will be lunch, drinks for anyone old enough, and swimming if you're able and so inclined." And a costume contest if you wanted to get dressed up.

Jon mentally reviewed what he'd needed to tell them, then nodded and headed through the portal. Possibly with a muttered, Call me boring.

comments

Not even anywhere to sit -- Constantine was going to be keeping people on their toes.

"Let's talk about our second favorite part of grief - anger," John said with annoying cheer once everyone had assembled. "Because once we stop trying to rewrite reality, it's easier to be angry with everyone and everything than let yourself feel anything else."

"We've all thought it - why me? Why them? I want revenge, someone needs to pay, fuck God, fuck the universe, it's my fault, it's their fault... you know the chorus, because you've probably sung it at least once. Some people get short-tempered and unstable, lashing out, while others go ice cold. Some get verbally snappy while others turn that rage inward."

"It's the destructive cycle of thoughts and outcomes: thoughts lead to feelings, feelings lead to behaviors, and behaviors circle back to our thoughts."

"So, how do you yank yourself out of that, to get going towards something 'healthier?'" Yes, he did the air quotes. "The pros talk a big game about recognizing the underlying feelings, not lying to yourself about it. Doing shite like meditation and yoga. Art. Poetry. Journaling. Stuff where you don't have to talk, you just do. Hell, they suggest thinking about it from someone else's point of view, but that seems fucked-up to me - then you're just feeling shit for two people, not just yourself."

"The thing about anger, is that it can be calming, in a fucked-up kind of way. That rage can burn everything else away, and let you feel like you're thinking clearly." John shrugged, his hands in his pockets. "You aren't, but it can feel like it."

"Spill. When you feel the anger rising, do you try to break the cycle? How? Does it actually work, or are you just going through the motions to feel better about yourself?"

comments

Maybe it was. Anyway, she was here now and the library itself seemed to be rather festive. Not because Belle was there but because it was June.

There were rainbow signs and books arranged in rainbow piles. There was plenty of informational non-fiction to be found and the romance section was nearly bursting at the seams.

The Fandom Library was ready for Pride. Or at least it was getting there. It could always do more.

comments

Ever.

“Today’s movie is about a boat! Boats seemed like a summery thing. Good for vacations.”

Stark had not seen the movie yet, no.

“This one has a cruise ship and a smaller boat and the two meet and…” he frowned. “Monsters? That’s fine. It might still be fun! And I have boat themed snacks for today! But not monster ones. I’m not sure what I’d do for monster snacks, actually. But for boats there are Life Savers that are hard and gummy ones. And there are goldfish crackers. And popcorn, of course, because there should always be popcorn. And salted caramels because sea water is salty.” It made sense to him. “And popcorn and sodas of course.”

Of course.

“Enjoy the movie?”

comments

"Honestly, it will just be a bunch of names - even moreso than usual - fighting over even stupider things than usual. One group of people wanted power, another group of people didn't like each other, a third group was trying to play peacemaker <s>of course they were white and green mages, this was back before Magic's color wheel had anything even approaching depth</s>, and in the end, Leshrac - mustache-twirling villain, even sans mustache - ended up ringing the Grey Chime. The Grey Chime was something of the poor man's Apocalypse Chime--" which had also gotten rung and yes, by a Planeswalker, but hey! Not on Dominaria! "--and destroyed most of Corondor, annihilating three major cities, Shikar, Telemar, and Hamath, and staining the sky above the continent eerie colors."

( Sure, it had involved magical beacon that had lured a bunch of Planeswalkers into one place and wouldn't let them leave, but when would THAT ever become relevant again? )

"That rift was called the Yavimayan Rift, as it had been located in Yavimaya, a great forest on what remains of Terisiare, after the Blast turned an entire continent into an archipelago. And, somewhat surprisingly, it was not the first rift to be formed. That honor belongs to the Madaran Rift." Liliana pulled out a large map of Dominaria, pointing to a small island off the western coast of Jamuraa, the southernmost continent. "Stop me if you heard this one," she continued wryly, "But Madara also used to be a continent. It was, in fact, where Nicol Bolas had his empire, back during Mythohistory. Unlike Ugin," and some other Planeswalkers who won't be named, "Bolas didn't just leave Dominaria once his spark ignited and never returned. He had power and dominion here, especially after unlocking powers that dwarfed even those of the other Elder dragons." Did Liliana sound wistful there? Nah, surely not. "Madara was the scene of the very first duel between Planeswalkers, some fifteen thousand years ago. Nicol Bolas and an unnamed demonic leviathan fought to the death. The stories that remain of that battle are sketchy at best, save that it took days, the seas went mad, storms rent the skies, and a third of Madara was utterly destroyed. Whatever spell took out a third of a continents also tore open reality and created the first rift."

Planeswalkers and wrecking reality, the peanut butter and jelly of Magic history.

comments

I apologize. I was forced into a mandatory ‘team-building exercise’ with my coworkers elsewhere. It will not happen again!”

Mostly because Sam had instituted some anti-Muppet security measures that he hoped would save him from further Muppet activities. Sam might have forgotten about Wednesdays though. Oh well. He'd remember eventually.

“Now! My required team building activity involved a boat. We had to go on a boat. For a party!” Oh, the horror.

“Boat parties, of course, are quite weird! As are all ‘team-building activities.’” Did you know felt eagles could do airquotes with their wings? You did now!

“Some parties, of course, are not weird. Some are perfectly lovely occasions. You will not find those parties on this island. Here things are weird as we discussed in the first class!” In case you forgot that this was an odd place when you had a teacher literally made of felt talking to you right now.

“A non-weird party might have food and drink and respectable music that could be danced to appropriately. A party here would have…glitter.” Sam shuddered at the thought. “And inappropriate music! Wild dancing! Things would be loud! And unpleasant! Unless, of course, the party is one hosted by one Captain America who can, naturally, never be weird as he is all that is right and good.”

“Now! Let us discuss parties! What, to you, would make a good and not weird party?”

comments

"One of you didn't know about this last week," week before last. Details, "so let's start with it: vaccines. Get them. A vaccine is when they poke you with a needle and then you don't die of--pick a plague, any plague, doesn't matter what plague you pick, they've probably got a vaccine for it. So pop on down to the clinic, tell them what world you're from, and let them come up with a schedule to catch you up on all the not-dying needles you need for that world and this one, hmm?" The clinic seemed to have...changed...somewhat since she had left the island, but surely they still offered vaccines. "Then when you go home you can be incredibly healthy and the envy of all your friends. No, I don't know how to get your friends vaccinated." Honestly, who worried about their friends dying of influenza? Not Yennefer, that was for sure, but then she wasn't sure Jaskier was aging anyway.

No, she hadn't just admitted Jaskier was her friend. Why did you think that?

"To answer your next question, no, I haven't the foggiest idea how the vaccines work. They seem to be science, whereas I could tell you all about it if they were magic. But they do work, so: get some. Are there any questions? I do hope not."

comments
