BWI Airport, Portalocity Lounge, Saturday Morning

So everyone else had, like, dramatic backstories and reasons to show up here and stuff. Which was fine, you know, if you were emotionally in the zone enough to go to those kinda lengths. Denise had just been, you know, chilling with her dad last night watching some hockey guys really pound in on each other - no, seriously, really get into it. One of them broke a rib or something, which was kinda cool.

Then she'd been dropped off at the airport, gotten a ticket stuffed into her hands, and that was that. No reason to get all dramatic and touchy-feely about it.

And now it was Saturday morning and she was on the airport. Sitting around. Chugging water and listening to her discman while watching the kids down the hall, trying to figure out how they were gonna croak. Sure, there was some kind of shuttle supposed to show up, but it wasn't there yet. A girl had to keep herself busy.

She figured the dweebs starting to mill around the terminal were probably classmates or something. Lame.

[[ wait for the ocd up! ]]

Scully sort of wanted to die. Which was not teen dramatics (thank you, don't talk to her right now, Mulder) but just a recognition that she was in yet another airport (she hated airports), waiting for a bus (hated buses), to take her somewhere they were going to make her camp. The last few times she camped did not work out at all... Poor Queequeg.

There was also the fear that she'd be outed as an impostor within seconds of opening her mouth, and then where would she be?

So she was keeping her mouth determinedly shut as she rolled her bags over to the shuttle area, and discreetly watching her fellow passengers for cues.

Or just looking confused and anxious. That worked too.

"Sit," came the order, from a blonde girl who really didn't look as if she cared. "If you're for Fandom High then you're in the right spot."

And wasn't that thrilling? Rosalind didn't think so.

Scully gave the blonde an evaluating look, taking her time over it, then settled herself on one of the seats. "I am. Dana Scully. Do you know how much longer we have before the shuttle leaves?"

The look was matched with a slightly bland evaluating look of Rosalind's very own. She was a Turk; she could do evaluating looks even when she felt half dead.

"A while yet," she answered, folding her hands neatly in her lap. "Our escorts haven't arrived yet."

Scully nodded and set her jaw, one hand fiddling with the tag on her suitcase, but otherwise appearing calm. "Have you heard much about this place? I only knew I would be attending this week. I couldn't find much information about it on the internet. Just that it specializes in--" And don't grit your teeth, Dana. "Difficult cases."

"I found out yesterday," she said, warming to the girl slightly. "I know that it's supposedly a safe place."

In another universe. This was why she had a headache. Never mind the waking from a coma two days ago.

"Safe," Dana repeated, and the fiddling stopped at this piece of confirmation, her shoulders unconsciously relaxing a fraction. Good to know Byers and Langley hadn't been too far off in their arrangements. "That's--" A nod as she tried to hide her reaction. "Always good." She tilted her head at the girl, considering, and said, "You weren't given much warning either, were you."

"Very little," she admitted, blue-green eyes flicking curiously the girl's way. "There was no point in complaining though."

Not to Tseng.

"I'm Rosalind." The 'nice to meet you' came along with a faint smile.

"Scully." Wait. "I mean. Dana." She blew out a breath, then went with, "I'm used to being called Scully." She gave Rosalind an equally faint smile. "I'm still adjusting to recent-- changes." Yeah, that about covered it.

"My sympathies," she said, "about the changes. I am not particularly fond of this one myself."

This one being attending high school.

"Would you rather be called Scully in that case?"

"Please," Scully said in relief. One less source of cognitive dissonance. The only person who called her Dana regularly these days was her mother. "Where were you before?" she asked, cautious, hoping that wouldn't be a bad question. "If you don't mind me asking." God knows her own previous history was too ridiculous to share truthfully.

Rosalind wasn't sure how much she could say. Not yet.

"In the hospital," she admitted. "I was only released yesterday. This is--a pretty big change."

Scully nodded, brow furrowing, and opted not to ask for details; there would be plenty of time to ask personal questions if the other girl felt like sharing over the summer. Depressing thought.

To distract herself, she did a quick visual check of Rosalind, who seemed well, and asked, "You're feeling okay now? Traveling can be stressful." More dryly, she added, "Especially with the wrong travel agents."

"Hello," Tim said. "You here for Fandom High?"

Re: Waiting for the Shuttle

[identity profile] showmetheproof.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
"Apparently," Scully allowed, giving the teenager a wary nod, and a small smile. "I wasn't informed that there would be so many of us on this trip." She collected herself and held out a hand. "Dana Scully. Annapolis."

"Tim Drake, Gotham City," Tim said. "You done the boarding school thing before?"

Did the dorms at the University of Maryland count?

"No," Scully said, since her cover-persona hadn't. "I'm a navy brat." She sat down and looked around their group, then back to Tim. "Have you? I'm not quite sure what to expect."

Re: Waiting for the Shuttle

[identity profile] boywonder03.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, but I think this one's a little different from the one I used to go to," Tim said. "That was K through eight."

Re: Waiting for the Shuttle

[identity profile] showmetheproof.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
"You were in boarding school as a kindergartner?" Scully's voice went up a little in surprise. "I wasn't aware that was even an option."

Re: Waiting for the Shuttle

[identity profile] boywonder03.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
"I was a very advanced child," Tim said dryly, then added. "My parents did a lot of traveling."

Re: Waiting for the Shuttle

[identity profile] showmetheproof.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh." Scully didn't feel adequate to commenting on that, not completely. "I see." She tilted her head, and frowned. "I don't think I've heard of Gotham. Where is it?"

"About half an hour up the river from Blüdhaven," Tim said, wondering if she'd recognize that name.

Re: Waiting for the Shuttle

[identity profile] showmetheproof.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm not familiar with either." Which was interesting; she'd thought she knew most of the major East Coast cities. "So what brings you to this particular school right now?"

...she really had to work on her small talk.

Re: Waiting for the Shuttle

[identity profile] boywonder03.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
"I hear it provides an excellent education," Tim said. "You?"

Re: Waiting for the Shuttle

[identity profile] showmetheproof.livejournal.com 2010-05-08 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Um.

Um?

"...There were some legal difficulties. It's complicated," Scully said vaguely, scrambling for a reason to be here and realizing that while she and Mulder had come up with a fairly plausible backstory for herself, they'd left the answer to this simple question out. "I'm glad to hear it has high education standards, though."
