Getting to Know Your Own Backyard | Monday, Period 1

Another summer workshop term. Another class instructed to meet Kanan and Hera at the landing pads in the Scrapyard. Kanan was clutching tightly to a travel cup of caf when the students arrived.

"This place is hell-bent on making me get ready earlier every class I teach," he muttered, waving for students to follow him on board the Ghost.. "Please, just throw me into the sun. Not that we'll be close enough, but at least it'd wake me up before I cook to death on my way to being utterly obliterated by gravity and burning plasma."

"Please do not throw anyone into the sun," Hera said, giving Kanan a look. Not that she wasn't clutching her caf just as tight, but there would be no spacing anybody on her watch.

Well, nobody that was here today, anyway.

"Anyway, it looks like we've got a smaller class than before," Kanan mused. "Good. We won't have to snuggle up in the cockpit so much this term. And one new face, so it's introduction day, which we'll do on our way to the Sun. I'm Kanan Jarrus, basically Hera's maintenance guy here, though I've got my own fair share of piloting freighters around the galaxy we come from. Nothing as nice as the Ghost here, but... freighters."

The Expedient had given him plenty of experience when it came to maintenance. So. There was that, at least.

"I'm Hera Syndulla," Hera said with a wave. "The Ghost is my ship, so I'll be your pilot. You may also see my droid Chopper around; he's doing work, so do not disturb him." Because he'd be doing work, and not at all because he was a cranky bucket of bolts.

"Neither of us is from around here, so we're using these classes to get a read on the local system," she said. "Last class we went to all the planets, so this time we're doing the nonplanetary bodies. Starting with the system's sun."

"Pretty sure we're all familiar with the sun by now," Kanan mused. "That big ball of plasma that's been trying to kill us all summer. Basically the reason the Earth can support life in the first place. Well. That and water. And a breathable atmosphere..." Kanan, you were getting off-track. "Anyway, it's what's known as a G-type main sequence star, which roughly just translates to a yellow dwarf. Main sequence - that's the part that translates to 'dwarf,' by the way - stars are the most numerous true star in the universe, though most of the stars in this galaxy are of the red persuasion, making this one brighter than roughly 85% of the rest of the stars in the Milky Way. Either way, this particular yellow dwarf exists eight light minutes away from the planet that Fandom is currently parked on, Earth."

He was pretty sure there was maybe one person in this class who was even from Earth. So, this term would be a fun tour.

Hera had them launched and into hyperspace quickly enough; it was barely a minute to get there. "It's a little over one hundred times the size of Earth and…" excuse her while she did the math "...three hundred thirty thousand times its mass. Not huge as stars go, but respectable. Mostly hydrogen, lots of helium, a few other things. Pretty typical for a star."

"Looks like this particular star is somewhere around middle age," Kanan mused, looking at the readings. "Which means, hey, it'll be stable for another five billion Earth years, give or take. Not even stars last forever, even if they'll typically outlast any of us. When this one destabilizes into a red giant, it's pretty much going to just swallow up Mercury and Venus and turn Earth into an uninhabitable wasteland. If it isn't one already by then."

This wasn't meant to be a knock against Earth humans in particular. Honest. He'd seen plenty of planets turned to garbage in his own galaxy by the Empire in his lifetime alone, and had read of plenty more that had gone bad well before his time due to one conflict or another. Taris was not exactly a resort planet, for example. Not to even mention what had happened to Makeb.

"Hopefully Earth's species will be on other planets by then," Hera said. She liked to keep positive. "We'll be doing a few passes; keep your eyes on the horizon and maybe you'll get to see a mass ejection. Looking directly down's probably going to be pretty boring." Hey, at least they had shields up so nobody would get blinded.

"Oh," she added, "and introduce yourselves!"

"Hi, I'm Peebee, and what, like I was going to pass up a chance to explore a solar system that's totally unknown to me?" The look on her face confirmed anything her tone didn't, in terms of there only being one, obvious answer to that question. "It's not connected to the mass relay network back home yet, so Fandom has been my only experience with it so far. And you know? That needed to be fixed. So. Here I am."

"As good a reason as any," Kanan replied, grinning. "You missed the stuff where we hit up all the other planets, but they're mostly either uninhabitable rock balls, or uninhabitable gas giants, anyway. No life outside of Earth so far."

Which was so weird.

Well, they were about a century and a half away from finding the Prothean ruins on Mars.

"None at all, really?" Peebee blinked a few times. "Wow. Guess that makes this planet pretty special."

So yeah, she thought it was weird too.

"It's definitely something," Kanan snorted. "Backrocket, mostly."

Sorry not sorry, Earth.

"Oh, I've lived on plenty of planets that you might describe as 'rustic,'" Kanan snorted. "Most of them at least still had a decent spaceport."

Kanan had a really low bar when you actually sat down and squinted a little.

Peebee laughed. "Is this island even big enough for a proper spaceport? Maybe a shuttle landing pad at least."

"Two landing pads," Kanan clarified. "One on the roof of the building that Hera and I live in, and that one we just took off from."

They were both kind of cute, in their own ways.

"On the plus side, at least that means there's somewhere to park. Barely."

Kanan shook his head and laughed at that.

"Hell, I hope not," he replied. "I'm pretty sure most pilots out there know the difference between luxury accommodations and an actual junkyard."

Then again, he'd met a few...

"Oh, right, it's how we really get around the galaxy in my universe," Peebee explained, with an animated expression that suggested she was about to be on a geeky roll. "The relays are ancient, tech from before our time that we don't even fully understand yet. Basically, most of our major systems have a relay in them, and if it's active it can link up with a relay in another system."

She was pacing back and forth while she talked, hands waving in gestures that were almost too excitable to be coherent.

"So the two linked relays create a mass effect corridor between them, reduce the mass of the ship traveling between them to almost nothing, and poof! Practically instantaneous travel hundreds of light years away. Thousands, if it's two of the major relays. I mean, sure, you're limited to FTL going from the relay to your destination, but it really cuts down on the travel time, you know?"

"Massive," Peebee replied, "and honestly? Probably even bigger than we realize. It spans most of the known galaxy, and there's relays that can't be used because the one on the other end is dormant, so who knows how many of them are really out there?"

Re: Introductions!

[personal profile] onefootoutthedoor 2017-07-04 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"Some of the major ones can connect to multiple relays," Peebee clarified, "and from much farther away, but yeah. The relay on the other end needs to be active before we can get somewhere."

This would be fun in thirty years or so when humans found out that Charon was a relay, not a moon of Pluto, and just started hopping around the network all willy-nilly and accidentally starting a war with the Turian Hierarchy.

She activated her omni-tool and brought up a holographic image of a relay.

"Plus? Pretty."

"Enough about how they work to know how to use them." Peebee let the holo revolve, because look at those elegant curves. "Just not enough to know how to build any of our own."

She was mildly insulted that a 50,000 year old extinct civilization had figured things out more than they had. Ugh, this cycle, get with the program.

Aw, Earth kid. Kanan gave Eric a little, encouraging smile.

"Hey, you're expanding on that experience," he noted. "That's a good thing. Welcome back, Eric. Is there anything out there in the solar system that you have any particular interest in?"

They already had a list in mind, loosely, but that didn't mean they couldn't try to squeeze something in.

"I've heard worse reasons to want to go check out an asteroid belt in person," Kanan mused, scratching his chin. "That was already on the list of things to do. Maybe we'll get out and walk around on Ceres while we're there, assuming it isn't too dangerous."

Because he'd be lying if he said he hadn't been a bit disappointed by just how many planets in this solar system would have killed them outright, he was hoping to make up for that a little bit this time around.
